To be fair, I think Deadbolt is a mediocre song at best and its regard as some bastion of Thrice's greatness is misplaced. Their UIACC cover has none of the charm or emotion of the original. They take what is a beautiful, poignant song and turn it into a run-of-the-mill hard-rock/post-hardcore song. EDIT: re-listening now and the Thursday one is even worse than I remember. The transitions are all so clumsy and harsh, they bury the main riff of the song for some strange reason, and the vocals don't do come anywhere close to conveying the emotion of the original.
Thursday is fantastic and a staple, but both vocalist for Wolves have great voices and better than Jeff and whoever screams in Thursday. I feel there is a lot of nostalgia coming into play here. Rock/post-hardcore/metal is their style so that's what all their songs are going to sound like lol!
I disagree wholeheartedly, but even taking that perspective as true, it doesn't mean they're better for this song. The clean vocalist for Wolves doesn't sound bad, but there's no there there. There's none of that passion and desperation in Geoff's vocals that are integral to the song. The same with the screams. They're generic, polished post-hardcore/metalcore. The freneticism of the screams in the original is what lends to the emotionality of the song and makes it great. The cover rounds out the edges and ends up flattening the song, both musically and emotionally.
True, I probably just biased because I love them and they are probably one of the better newer bands in the last few years.
Right, and the cover is technically proficient in that it takes the song and successfully puts it into their box, and it doesn't hurt my ears to listen to, but that's not what makes a good cover to me. That's just good karaoke.
Back to the topic at hand, I can't wait to get high-quality digital versions of the EP and try to make a Deeper Palms deluxe version. I definitely think Deeper Wells could lead into The Grey and In This Storm should lead into Blood On Blood.
i like wolves' cover of deadbolt for two specific reasons: ) their version is mastered to current sound quality. ) they added the extended ending that thrice has been doin to the live performance for quite sometime. ...however i'm late to the thursday party. where can i hear this cover of theirs?
I will keep to my theme and say I also like the blindside cover better than the original too haha. I love Blindside so much though so it's not a dig at them. I think what you said about the sound quality makes it for me. These just hit harder and so much faster/louder.
Supposedly there's a better sounding version of the EP out there, I am about to check it out now to see if that's true. EDIT: Yeah this is definitely better, no more quiet 2-4 tracks.
Tracklist I'm testing out: Only Us Hold Up a Light Deeper Wells The Grey The Dark Just Breathe Everything Belongs My Soul Stumbling West A Branch In the River A Better Bridge In This Storm Blood On Blood Beyond the Pines
Only Us A Branch In the River Deeper Wells The Grey Stumbling West My Soul Just Breathe Everything Belongs In This Storm Blood On Blood The Dark Hold Up a Light A Better Bridge Beyond the Pines I never thought Blood on Blood was a good fit for the 2nd to last song, esp since Beyond the Pines is another slow jam. Took this opportunity to liven it up a bit.
I liked this version. One hangup is that Everything Belongs, My Soul, and Stumbling West is 3 slower jams in a row, but they're all so good and flow really well together, sonically.
Assuming Blood stays there in your order. I am pretty happy with all of these initial drafts of deluxe Palms. Should only get better over time.
