Deeper Wells feels like a song the would have contributed to the next version of Tony Hawk. Politically charged, and punk reminiscent. Guitar parts are really cool and drive the song. A Better Bridge feels like a second song. Something like Between The End and Where We Lie. I like the voice of reason angle and it's a beautiful outdo that reminds me of the piano on the Earth EP. In This Storm reminds me of Everything Belongs in all the best ways and some Stay With Me. I do love Dustin's willingness to stick with themes. Stumbling West is groovy. Circles, Beggars, Atlantic, some Dustin solo, Water Ep. Yeah, still love how the lines Deeper Wells and Palms get mentioned in this song. All instruments have portions of songs that shine on this EP. I'm happy with all 14 songs and I wish they had just released them all at once, although its been fun having something new. Also, was Sea Change wrote the same time as the rest of TBE?
No surprise here but all 4 songs are solid. I like the first two tracks more than Side B of the record. Totally on the Pro Deeper Wells side, I don't see how it can be any other way. I don't hear The Messenger or anything in the song, but I do hear a little Motion Isn't Meaning in the last 3rd of the song. It rules. I guess I'll be the unpopular one here and say it, but I can totally see why these songs were cut above any other ones on Palms. Even though I dig them, they all sound unpolished compared to the album. A Better Bridge I may have replaced with either Hold Up a Light or Blood on Blood, but that is the only one. I think the band made the right move. Stumbling West sounds like it would belong more on a Dustin solo album.
I'm with @Kevin360 on that to where I haven't figured most of them out yet. No biggie though, that just means I'll need to listen a ton more
That's why I wouldn't do it! Better Bridge is the only song on the EP strong enough to replace something....but I don't think I'd change Palms at all.
"We keep building bigger fences (repeat what feels like a thousand more times when in fact it's only 2) but we should be digging deeper wells!!!"
Yeah, dont you dare touch Blood on Blood! It's perfect. Also, I'm starting to like the title track more.
Exactly, we're talking about Thrice here, and everything about this song is peak Thrice. The way it builds (and breaks), the drumming, the bass, Dustin's lyrics and vocals, the way it repeats parts but not really quite the same, the bridge into the outro, the way it would lead perfectly into Blood On Blood had it been on Palms.
Spinning my copy for the first time right now and I’m really glad the title track on this was left off the LP. Thrice’s heavy/aggressive moments in their discography are some of my favorites, but I feel like I don’t need that from them anymore. The next three songs after Deeper Wells are perfect examples of that. A more mid-tempo is what they excel at currently. I can’t decide where I’d put them on Palms and maybe that’s a good thing. Perfect in this capacity.
Man I dunno, I think the song "Deeper Wells" is better than " A Branch" and I like those moments popping into their albums from time to time. But yeah I do enjoy their mid tempo songs more than those. You guys seriously think taking out "Hold up a Light" and throwing in "A Better Bridge" instead wouldn't had improved Palms. It certainly wouldn't have made it worse.
What! Branch is incredible! And I dunno about improving Palms, but I also already think it's a great album as is.
I think Palms is great too, I think it could be greater by substituting those songs. It was my album of the year last year. I don't think "A Branch" is a bad song, I just think "Deeper Wells" is better. I would trash "Hold up a Light" in a heartbeat though haha.
Both Deeper Wells and Branch have killer endings jams. If I were to place Deeper Wells on Palms, I'd go track two since the feedback at the end the Deeper Wells goes right into the intro of The Grey.
Didn't even notice that. Honestly they should just add them all in and make a mega album kind of like The Republic of Wolves did with "Shrine", all their extra songs fit in a proper place on that album.
