In This Storm is really meh from my first listen, those repetitive lyrics Dustin is doing now needs to goooooo....the back half/bridge part is really groovy though.
I really like each and every one of these songs. "Deeper Wells" is a great change of pace and would love to hear that in a live setting. "A Better Bridge" love the ebbs and flows through that song. "In this Storm" may be my least favorite, but really like it still if a bit repetitive. Stumbling West" I adore, it's so dang good.
Does Dustin Kensrue only own 1 T-shirt? He wears the “Love is the most powerful” T-shirt in every photograph taken of him the last 6 months lol.
I know I'm gonna get crap for this, but A Better Bridge might be my 3rd favorite track of the entire Palms experience.
The problem that I'm recognizing with songs like Deeper Wells is part of a much larger issue. Whenever Thrice tries to shred now, it almost sounds forced in some way. 'A Better Bridge' or 'Just Breathe' sound like the band is supposed to sound in 2019.
Since we were talking about singles the day, I think it’s funny how few people’s top 3 would be The Grey, Only Us and Hold Up Light. There’s just a lot to like about the band. They couldn’t make a filler album if they tried. I’d need more time with the new songs to feel out where they’d sit in the entirely of Palms era recordings for me, but this definitely resolved my only complaint about Palms feeling a little short. 14 tracks is a nice. It eases the waiting 2+ years for another full length.
Couldn’t agree more. Something feels off from the vocal delivery to the drum patterning. I much prefer the mid to down tempo songs where Dustin really sings As opposed to radio rock shouts.
At this point I’m sure there is a desire to please a very very wide Thrice audience taste. I’m sure some of that older hard stuff must have been horrible for Dustin’s voice, but for some fans, that may be their favourite aspect or side of this band.
After my first listen, In This Storm is definitely my favourite. I agree the latter two are the better two tracks, and should have been on the album.
These are all great. A Better Bridge and Stumbling West are my favorites on first few listens. I’m trying to come up with a revised Palms track list with these included.
Even when Dustin shouts in the heavy part of Only Us, it never quite sounded right to me. It's like he's trying to be old Dustin, but can't.
The "We burn at our stakes, we die by our swords. We choke in our trenches, we drown in our wars" part of the song? That part kills.
Yeah I love that part. I wish there was more of that. It’s the in between vocal delivery that I’m not super hot on.
