Similarly to my previous post I didn't quite love The Dark on first listen, but seeing it live helped me appreciate it more, especially the drums in the verses and the ending group vocal part.
I like The Dark. I think after hearing Dustin sample that section for fans to record I was eager to hear a final version. I’d imagine you can feel those drums in your chest live. And please, no one give Jbent a hard time for not naming those who sang guest vocals even if it’s just a joke. Not the time.
It sounds heavier live in my opinion. The guitar and bass really pound through the verses and bridge. And Dustin goes off vocally, of course.
I've seen thrice live more than any other band over the last 15 years except one (mwY) and I gotta say they have never disappointed. True professionals. They balance their sets so well with what people wanna hear and what they wanna play. I love hearing the new songs live because they really jump out at me. Even a couple years ago the TBEITBN songs live for the first time was unreal. Hope they tour this summer and play a couple other Palms tracks before this cycles over.
I love how all the lights turn off in the middle of Silhouette right before Ed screams. Dramatic af and I’m here for it. I think they upped their lights game for this tour. 5:05 mark..
I second Meg Myers (of course), Julien Baker, and Wolf Alice. I would also add Slothrust, Cherry Glazerr, Garbage, Rubblebucket, The Cranberries, Fiona Apple, Liz Phair (mostly her earlier material), Jewel (mostly her earlier material), PJ Harvey, Poe, Rilo Kiley, Metric, Best Coast, Broods, Brody Dalle (The Distillers, Spinerette, as well as her solo material), Phantogram, CHVRCHES, Ms Mr, The Naked and Famous, and Seapony. Sorry if that's kind of a lot haha
That band DAUGHTER is pretty cool, too. Oh, and Middle Kids. Man, I grew up on a steady diet of Fiona. That badass band Slow Mass also mixes in some female-led vocals.
For fans of Emma Ruth Rundle, Anna Von Hausswolff released a soul crushing album last year that I strongly recommend.
I just saw Middle Kids a few days ago, and they were fantastic. Also Daughter is one of my favourite bands, so good reccs.
Daughter is cool and all but have you guys heard Daughters. also that ex:re record from daughter's singer is phenomenal.
More female recommendations: Waxahatchee, Mynabirds, Ellie Goulding, Laura Stevenson, Sharon Van Etten, early Florence and the Machine, Jenny Owen Youngs, Glacier Veins, Swearin', and White Lung (if you're into a lot of screaming like I can be on occasion). That is all from me for now. Yay, Thrice!
The brouhaha this thread cooked up has resulted in a lovely recommendation list for RAWK's baddest women. All's well that ends well.
Just Breathe and Your Soul. Haven’t listened to this album in a while despite loving it when it came out. Think I’ll give it a spin tonight.
