Something I noticed: Hold Up A Light sounds a bit like Remedy (or Six Gun Quota) by Seether, or Seether in general. Another reason they could push this one. Post grunge/hard rock fans would be all over this.
A little late to the party, but here is my cold hot take. New Tour: Probably Epitaph’s doing. I have a strong feeling that Thrice will discuss regretting the Epitaph signing when their time with them is up and bit of time has passed. Only Us: I like to imagine that the video is a little self serving. Its message most closely represents what Dustin has been thinking/saying lately and where is head is at with his current worldview. Only Us is a safe bet for a song fans already like and know. It’s also a safe bet for gaining a wider audience as it doesn’t really speak too specifically to a certain sub-genre like other songs on the album do. Also, newer fans who may have heard the song before may see the video and be more likely to not change/skip it since they recognize the song. The music video also seems to touch on the Stranger Things/retro sounds references fans kept initially calling out. The video itself allows for the video to be shot without Thrice being present while they are on tour. And it’s an all around silly/fun video that also provides a pretty strong/accurate visual representation to the song’s message. Thoughts on a different single: I don’t feel like Beyond The Pines should be used at all. My reasoning is that it is obviously the most fan liked song on the album. The band has a definitive song that all fans will use to push the album by word of mouth and the song itself is such a sure bet that it has the chance of hooking and holding as many new fans as possible. Don’t oversaturate the market with it until you’ve let it autonomously squeeze out everything it can. When the touring/promotion/albums sales start to slow/stop is when you intentionally make it carry the album, maybe even give it a second wind. It will efinitely pick up new listeners who have no other notion of Thrice and also fans and their word of mouth friends will latch on and push the album even longer. As for what the next single should be, I don’t know. It depends on who you want to draw in. A heavier or more punk crowd? A branch in the river maybe? A softer or more religious crowd? Everything Belongs? A more generic rock sound? Hold Up A Light?Something in between that can take advantage of another fan base? Just Breath? Too many options and it depends on the direction the powers that be want to go. Vinyl: I’m sorry. It hasn’t been brought up lately and I have to just for fun. I am, after all, the guy on reddit that’s been pushing the vinyl fix with my Elitaph contact so it would be outrageous if I didn’t use the word vinyl at least once. Vinyl. Sorry.
I think they are going in that direction overall. It’s not a bad thing and they can reach a larger audience.
I’m in the camp that thought the Seether cover was super cool, but man do I hope this isn’t the case. I feel like TBEITBN was about as close as Thrice could get to a mainstream rock sound without compromising their artistry. That album really could have (and should have) pushed them into a broader audience.
Mainstream rock sound and artistry can go hand in hand though. There are a lot of great stuff in mainstream.
I probably am guilty of turning off anything that resembles that style of rock. I can't really figure out why.. especially bc I like when thrice does that sound so maybe I would like some of Seether's stuff.. ive never actually listened to them
Plus this isn't anything new for them. Image Of The Invisible is the oldest "mainstream rock" song that comes to mind.
Yeah those who have been laughing at the Seether comparisons over the last two years don't realise that... those are accurate. Karma And Effect and Finding Beauty In Negative Spaces are solid albums if you'd like to get into them. The rest ranges from mediocre to fine, but those two records were post-grunge/alt metal done right. I also see a lot of you praising Chevelle (edit: beat me to it), which doesn't sound that different from Seether's heavier songs.
I always thought Chevelle was more in line with Tool and Deftones than they were with Godsmack, Disturbed, etc. Always loved hearing Chevelle songs on the radio.
Thrice and Seether do not belong in the same sentence. They sound nothing alike. There's a reason Thrice ignored their cover. There's a reason you'll never see Thrice on a bill with bands like that. If they rejected the genre they made famous, then there's no chance they'll ever let themselves end up in that category of dreck.
I'm still waiting for someone to provide an analogue where Thrice released a new commercial for a 3-month-old commercial.
I cannot even begin to unpack how stupid and terrible this whole paragraph is. I'm sure glad the band has you to speak up for them haha.
If you need someone to explain why bands release singles and videos ... we’re starting so far from first principles that I don’t have close to enough time to help you.
Absolutely! I thought TBEITBN was a good example of this. I’m just saying I don’t see their artistry benefitting from going even further down that route. Could be 100% wrong. Also Chevelle is great. There’s definitely some good mainstream rock out there. Wasn’t trying to imply otherwise.
