I will say I’m disappointed with mr.Tate when I asked is this more experimental thank TBEITBN....,AND HE SAID ON THE WHOLE NO. I disagree my good sir.
Beyond the Pines. People are saying they don’t take to the lyrics with this record, but the lyrics here are a huge standout.
Excluding singles, "Beyond the Pines" is crushing the rest of the new songs on YouTube with 14K+ currently. "Just Breathe" is clocking 10K+. "Hold Up a Light" is the lowest with 4.8K. I really think they should make a video for Pines; word of mouth is only helping its case. It's just too lush with imagery not to do one.
This is kinda random but that “why don’t you stay” at 2:39 in Just Breathe reminds me so much of Anthony Green/Circa for some reason. The instrumental rhythm is so busy and intense right there and those vocals just soar beautifully over it
I also think I just realized part of why The Grey’s chorus feels like it channels Artist days so much to me... the vocal rhythm in the chorus (And my hands are open, reaching out / I'm learning how to live with doubt) is executed reeeally similarly to the last chorus of TAITA (Greedy jaws of death and chance / And pull me in with steady hands)
The vocalist in one of my bands once wrote a chorus in the studio, and the producer kept saying how familiar it seemed. Our bass player arrived at the studio a few hours later and immediately asked our singer if he'd been listening to "Stare at the Sun" lately. It was the same exact melody. My singer wasn't a Thrice fan, either. He respected them, but he wasn't crazy for them like the rest of the band. This was 2003 so he didn't know what was coming, obviously. However, he must've overheard the song through us since he never sought out TAITA himself. So, if cryptomnesia can happen to someone who didn't actively listen to Thrice, then it can certainly happen to Dustin.
First impressions from my first listen: - The songs are enjoyable and interesting. - I think I will end up listening to them a lot. - I love Thrice.
Just curious, does anyone see this potentially being their aoty? Not going to be mine, but I see it falling in my top 10
I think Foxing has that spot secured for me. But mewithoutYou could break it, and Palms still has potential.
My top 5 so far, in no particular order, is: Nearer My God [untitled] e.p. Wait for Love Palms Wind up Bird
That’s cool that wait for love made it in there, I remember recommending you that one haha. No shrine??
Wait, you're not already a Thrice fan? Dude, how'd that happen? You have to listen to Beggars. And, you also really should check out Dustin Kensrue's solo album Carry the Fire. And, I forget if you're a fan of Kings Kaleidoscope and Citizens & Saints, but if you like that type of worship music, listen to the album The Water & the Blood.
My favorite so far this year easily has been Kacey Musgraves. Though, w/ more listens, Thrice could sneak above her. My AOTY spot is reserved for mewithoutYou. My gosh have those couple songs & that EP been good. It's not even fair for a band that good to still be getting better. I'm sure The 1975 will be up there, too. And, I keep forgetting that Shad has a new one on the way.
