Without a doubt. Thrice was due for an arrangement like that. It's kinda like their MySpace performance/arrangement of 'Of Dust and Nations.'
Early two-spins-in thoughts Opening four tracks are super strong. Blood On Blood is tremendous and the guitar on it takes my brain right to Vheissu. Love the ending to Pines/the album. Everything Belongs and Hold Up a Light aren't doing much for me so far. Not sure about the production but I need more listens and probably better quality. I don't love the production on the last album (a minority opinion, it would seem) and that didn't stop that from growing on me a bunch after a fairly lukewarm initial reaction
Anyone else get some minor Incubus vibes musically on Just Breathe? Cause I get them and i like it alot.
Everything Belongs is different for them but I really like it. Pretty gorgeous song. And then the end of it is so fucking good. Wow. Chills.
My Soul was pretty good. Didn't quite get into it as easily as the first 5. Might take a couple more listens to appreciate it more.
Part of me wonders if "Hold Up a Light" was a courtesy to the WWE fans they adopted via Honey. I'm kidding, mostly. In sequence, I always find myself moving to it.
Blood On Blood is very interesting musically! I like the ethereal feel that the harp in the bridge gives it. Will have to revisit it and dig into it more.
Overall: Wow this is good! I knew it was going to be diverse but I didn't know it would be this diverse. Right now the front half is more immediate and i love the first 5 songs. Both A Branch In The River and Hold Up A Light are also highlights. The other three are good but seem like growers. Some really interesting moments overall and a bunch of solid songs!
Biggest complaint: I was hoping for more epic, explosive endings on several songs. This is different (again like a lot of this album) from what Thrice have done in the past where a lot of the songs here go out more peacefully and more mellow. When things do go out bigger, it's kinda brief. I appreciate the change from what we expect of them to shake things up, but i miss the huge loud outros and it kinda feels like something is missing without them :/ Love the outro on Everything Belongs though. That time it works really well.
Branch has one of their best endings ever. A lot of their endings on this record were more bass and/or vocal driven. The guitars were great on this record, but they weren't as dominant as usual. While I would've liked an ending a la "The Window," I'm still enamored with the vocal endings of Breathe and Pines.
Yeah Branch has one of the better endings for sure! The endings I really liked were Only Us, The Dark, Everything Belongs, and Branch.
First listen and I'm already crying by the end of Only Us. Those dynamics, that climax, Dustin's range... few bands can pull it off. What an opener, and a career defining song.
Everything Belongs is the kind of song I always wanted them to write after Atlantic/Red Sky and the Air EP. Absolutely gorgeous. So far this is the most I've ever appreciated an album since Beggars. Let's begin the second half.
