why would they debut The Dark acoustic with no percussion. Crazy. Gave me such a weird first impression. Song is cool
I think that's my least favorite song on the album. It starts out okay, but it gets way too repetitive. sorry.
Happy to have this early, not happy for the band that it leaked.. glad it’s great. Should be a fun release week and I’m v excited for my vinyl
Finally listened. In love with Dustin’s vocals on the Dark especially in the verses I only made it to about halfway thru blood on blood and still haven’t listened to the closer but my first impressions are very good
I'm glad TBE was more straightforward and accessible. Its success introduced the band to a new audience, a rare feat at this point in one's career. Ultimately, TBE paved the way for them to get weird on the next record, which we now know as Palms. Returning from a hiatus with something as diverse as Palms may not have been the best move for business. Yes, the hardcore fans like us would've loved it, but TBE extended the band's shelf life while reminding corporate overlords that they're still a viable commodity.
i see where people are coming from with Hold Up a Light. i chuckled a bit listening to it driving home. but got into the house and listened again. and i'm def fine with it. not sure how i'll be with it a year from now. there are a few songs where i was thinking "whoa that was quick" when they ended. not a bad thing and it probably has to do with expectation. i love The Dark. it will be one of my favorite songs of the year.
Good analysis. I was slightly concerned that they would be too conservative on Palms and only write radio-friendly songs. I'm glad they got a little weird with it.
Blood On Blood gives me Circa vibes, and Beyond the Pines starts off like a Julien Baker song. I love it.
This might be my biggest gripe, most notably with My Soul. It feels like it should come back in with a heavy outro.
ERR is perfect for that song. But The electric guitar, no percussion at the start of Pines is straight up JB.
While I love how Pines ends, I did expect them to go back to a loud/dramatic ending, especially with so much time left in the song. "Only Us" still drives me nuts as far as abbreviation goes. Overall, I'm not hung up on structure like I thought I would be.
