I personally don’t like The Dark or Everything Belongs a whole lot rn. Might grow on me. My Soul gets me. My favorite Thrice songs are Atlantic and Circles and this is the new album version of those
LOVE this, what a great album from them. Feels super fresh but not like they reinvented themselves. I really dig how they let Ed drive a lot of these songs. As a person who has felt alienated by Dustin’s beliefs and lyrics in the past, it was really beautiful to hear lyrics of inclusion and openness (Only Us, The Dark, Just Breathe, Everything Belongs). Not gonna lie, I got a little emotional during Everything Belongs the first time I heard it.
I enjoy "Hold Up a Light" for what it is. I think the issue people are having is that it doesn't suit the rest of the record. It would've been a perfect fit on the last two records. But, not a big deal.
It’s funny Ed didn’t seem happy with his parts on the last album, and here he is really taking demand and setting the grooves. I like the album a lot after one listen, can’t tell if I love it yet
Does this album feel like “air” the full length to anyone else? Not in the sense of electronics but more on the sense of how much space is in the mix, alt rock but the guitars are more conservative like that ep. also Like lots of low end, tons of high end but the mids/guitars are pushed back.
I won’t go into it bc peeps get mad. But holy shit the time signatures on this thing are off the chart
I’ve only listened once but off the top of my head Only us is in 3/4 but the drums play in 4 in the break down, they did this on the window as well, love it. Just breath intro/verse 3 measures of 6 and then a measure of 4 Prechorus 4/4 Chorus 3/4 Everything belongs - 7/4 great feel, feels super natural Beyond the pines - 5/4 There’s other cool stuff too, like some songs will be in 3 but have parts in 4 and vise versa.
a lot of weird mixing choices on this. Apart from the drums sounding flat I also noticed the weird compression choices on the vocals - i feel like they would benefit from way more compression in the heavy parts.
It’s a different mix, drums don’t sound flat to me, lots of reverb on the drums. Also not a lot of compression on the vocals what you are hearing are dry doubles, Dustin said they used very little reverb on the vocals this album and it def shows.
