Oh I didn't mean that as a bad thing, I love Dave Grohl and Foo Fighters! And yeah, Branch in the River is definitely the heaviest track on this.
a branch in the river sounds like the heaviest songs on beggars (at the last) had an angry, meaner older brother
this closer is lush gotta admit a lot of this is softer than i was expecting. i predict there will be an inclination to call this a more experimental thrice album but im not so sure. or rather, i think thats half of whats going on here. they've played with synths before, messing with different sounds isnt really the new thing here. whats new is how these songs are composed and structured from the ground up. theres a lot of things going on you can trace back to beggars, alchemy, and vheissu but these things are recontextualized for modern thrice. blood on blood for example takes the composition format you could find on earth but ends up sounding absolutely nothing like anything on that EP.
Don’t have a computer atm so I’m just gonna wait for streaming on Friday, but all these reactions to Branch in the River have me VERY hyped.
i dont really fuck with hold up a light. other than that this may be the best collection of thrice songs that exists. that doesnt necessarily mean i think its their best album....yet
I wish i liked The Dark as much as everyone else. For me the standouts are Just Breathe, A Branch In the River, Hold Up A Light, Blood on Blood and Beyond the Pines
I was like, “Dang. This is so uncharacteristic of him... Give the dude a break for having an opini—oh.”
So I found out this leaked at 4 am. Listened to it twice until 6 am (I suck so bad). First listen I found the album very jarring, I think a lot of this is new territory for them. Second listen I really started to appreciate a lot of those songs. I love the ethereal feel some of these songs have. I think my initial standouts (not counting the singles) are The Dark, Just Breathe, Blood on Blood, and Beyond the Pines. So excited to listen to this more
Oh I love TBEITBN and how heavy it is. What I mean by "heavier heavy" is like a Hold Fast Hope or Firebreather that just melts your face. The closest they got to that sort of thing on TBEITBN was "Death From Above" or "Whistleblower" which were great, but I dunno if I'd put them on that level.
I don't see much hate, I think it's just not in people's favorites on the record. I personally love it.
