In terms of singles released, this might be my favorite back-to-back singles released from them post-hiatus
lol i listened to gnash 3 times and was gonna skip the rest of the singles, but the hype in here is making it reeeeeally hard...
I’m still resisting(mainly because I’m still at work and can’t really listen to it even if I wanted to for another several hours). I only gave Gnash one spin. But as someone who loves that Beggars and Major/Minor sound, I’m ecstatic reading these impressions.
That bass tone is out of control. Thrice’s rhythm section is so good. I agree these are my favorite singles from them in a minute. Love the range of these two. Sufficiently excited for this record.
This is their sweet spot. Ed absolutely killed it on H/E and I'm glad to hear that continue here. Agreed that it reminds me of Promises sonically, and Dustin's certainly gone a little more impressionist with his writing, apart from the chorus.
Albatross is solid. Not in a rush to replay it like I was with Gnash but that's because of its familiarity (echoing the comparisons to other songs from their past few albums) whereas the latter was more of a curveball.
It's a pleasant Thrice song that I won't skip in sequence. At the same time, I'm also not going to tell my grandkids about the first time I heard "Albatross." I'm afraid to read the comments since there's going to be people who jumped the gun and acted as if "Gnash" signaled a return to their 2003 sound.
Remember during TBE when Ed voiced his dissatisfaction with how MIA his bass tone was? These last few records have really atoned for that.
Didn't he also expressed wanting to write in the same room together instead of sending each other parts I wonder if they started doing that again
I played albatross a few times while heading to work it went from the song is alright to now having the chorus stuck in my head but I think I will resist relistening until the album drops
Even during the recent podcast, he lamented that /East required more virtual writing due to the pandemic. Based on Dustin's first interview, it still sounds like they bank a lot of parts individually before mixing and matching them into songs.
Hey siri set a reminder for August 25 2065 to tell my grandkids about this great new thrice song i just listened to for the first time. V catchy and groovy
Ah, so you're taking the idea literally. Here are a couple alts for you: "I don't think this release is particularly memorable." Or: "Years from now, I don't think we'll remember where we all were the first time we heard Albatross."
A solid Thrice song. Good grooves. Some of the tones do remind me of Beggars and M/m. Very happy. Gonna give it a few more listens over the week and then I’ll hopefully peace out until we get the whole record.
