Faves from Palms are Just Breathe, My Soul, Branch in the River, Blood on Blood, and Beyond the Pines. Supplement with the Deeper Wells EP and you've got a great album.
I’m not quite sure what it is about that whole era of the band, but that music just did not land for me. I think a lot of it is good, or at least solid, but feels watered down from what the did on TBEITBN, not to mention what they had done pre-hiatus I also think the mix of the record does those songs no favors. A lot of them just come across so flat and sound so thin to me. It’s not a bad album by any means, but I think it’s easily their worst since Identity Crisis.
Pines and Breathe are all-timers. Blood is really cool too. But it also has several songs in their bottom tier.
All the ones mentioned. Branch in the River especially love how it has a Jawbox/Fugazi era DC Hardcore vibe
I feel like I have wrote this before but if the other songs were as good as beyond the pines I feel like it would have been a top tier thrice album but I rank it among one of their weakest since identity crisis
Still holding out hope that they'll do an entire album with a similar vibe as the Water EP. It's such a good sound for them and I wish they explored it more.
I’m sure it’s been discussed, but Undertow gives big Water vibes and that’s why it’s one of my top three songs from the new album
An album of water ep type songs with Dustin pulling off those airy falsetto harmonies would be perfect
Same. I had hope that Dusk could have been an opportunity to write a night diving type song, but alas it wasn't, but man do I want another song like that from them.
been on a big major minor kick. Was always at the bottom of my rankings, but Riley / Ed are incredible on that record.
I was a huge fan of M/m upon release. I recall putting it over Beggars. Today, I feel crazy for that take. If M/m is Dustin at his most preachy, I think Beggars is his peak with theology. That may be why, despite not really knowing what I am anymore, I still love all of Beggars as it speaks to more foundational ideas vs preaching outright. I hope at least Kevin understands what I mean by that. M/m has become very hit or miss for me. Still love Yellow Belly, Blinded, Disarmed, Blur, and Words In The Water. Never liked Call It In the Air. I like Cataracts, Promises, Anthology, and Listen Through Me (controversial) a good bit. Don’t really like Treading Paper anymore. I guess that’s more hits than I initially thought. Yet, that leaves this as my least favorite album other than maybe Identity Crisis.
Minus Everything Belongs, I love Palms. EB just sounds like a church song that my super seeker friendly church would perform during a service to set up the sermon. Due to the fact that I only sing and hear it as hold a bud light, I dig that song.
MM is def the preachiest. For some reason it doesn’t bother me as much as it used to. Kinda in that sunny day zone, where it’s an honest reflection of where they are at, at the time. And not a constant bash over your head album after album.
major minor is also not really one of my favorites. their whole 2010s output in general was not my favorite stretch in their discog but these last two have brought me back in a major way
Yeah. This is where I am on Beggars and Major/minor. Anthology was my first dance song with my wife on our wedding day, so that album, and song, holds a special place that no amount of deconstruction can erase.
