I think west is a lot better than east. There’s a few songs I wasn’t crazy about on East, mostly the dreamer and still life. I legit enjoy every song on this record and I think the highs could stand up to any of their albums. (I don’t think it’s better than beggars but I’d put it right behind it) my post hiatus ranking may be West TBEITBN Palms (had a big resurgence on this one this year) East
Unfortunately this isn't connecting with me. The last output I dug was Beggars. The drum production especially I'm not a fan of, this more raw sound they have. Glad others still dig it though.
This isn’t to downplay you’re opinions at all, but my brain broke when I was jumping between the Taylor Swift thread and this one and I was like, “This guy really doesn’t like this album.” And then I realized I was reading your negativity on both of these albums in each thread. Maybe you’ll connect with this one in time. I wasn’t huge on Beggars when I first heard it, but it became one of, if not my absolute, favorite albums of all time.
I know man! My brain is a strange thing; I find myself often going against the majority on this forum for many albums/movies.
I wonder if Thrice will ever work with an outside producer again. I always thought it would be interesting to see what they could do with someone like Danger Mouse. The records he did with Black Keys, Portugal. The Man, Parquet Courts – I would be really interested to see what kind of music they would do together. I tweeted the idea at DK a while back and he said it was an interesting thought.
Scott Evans from Kowloon Walled City was involved in the production here, and has been on their last few releases I believe.
After a few listens, my tepid take (as opposed to my hot take, not that I'm tepid on the album, and also not my Teppei Take) is that it's a continuation and evolution of the sound from Beggars, M/m, and that they revisited on Palms. It has some similarities to the Deeper Wells EP and the b-sides from H/E (obviously), but also pulls from Vheissu and TAI. Non-single standouts are Blackout, Undertow, and especially Vesper Light, which I would already say is one of the best songs of their career.
He's not in there day-to-day with them grinding on the creative process of building the songs out. He's been involved in mixing.
After 3 full listens: To me- it takes everything they’ve done and the highs of their career and puts it in a very cohesive, moody record. can’t say it will beat H/E yet (which I adore, and better than Palms and TBE) but definitely more of a slow burn record it seems
He's also credited as "Assistant Producer", at least on Apple Music, so I assume that means more than just mixing. But I still get what you're saying.
I agree, even though I like it off the bat it feels like it will be a grower, which isn't usually the case with Thrice records. Excited to dive in with the lyrics and take it on the all-important (for me anyway) running test this weekend.
