I prefer the first single but this one is cool, too. Looking forward to the full album experience, I'm sure it will all be even better then. Fun song.
Albatross is fucking goooood, I was liking it enough but then the bridge hit and I was like OHHHHHHHYYEEAAAAAAA
So much talk about Ed's bass tone (justifiably), but not enough for that sweet, sweet guitar tone at the very end which I'm assuming is Teppei.
I'm pretty sure he is married to Brett Anderson from the Donnas. If not, they're at least engaged (they were a year ago). They've been together like a decade. He did have a long term girlfriend back in the day where it ended badly around 08 or 09. That was the inspiration for "Talking Through Glass/We Move Like Swing Sets". Ed wrote the "we move like swing sets" bit (I take it he means "back-and-forth"), then Dustin expanded the ideas Ed had to form the rest of the song's lyrics.
Ah that's good to know. Little more detail from Ed in the vinyl liner notes: "the swing sets idea came about from my memories as a kid, swinging staring at the person next to you. every once in a while, you would link up with that person and feel stuck eye-to-eye in some sort of connected stillness amongst all the greater movement around you, it always seemed special to me but would never last long unless you were both working together to keep the connection. i felt that that was a perfect metaphor for love and relationships. we all deal with this and often get lost in the movement, unable to connect again."
Listening to "Albatross" again today, now I'm getting a real Fugazi vibe in the opening. It is pretty great. The vocals in the track have a certain something that I'd argue is shared with those in "Dead Wake" and "Summer Set Fire..", that makes them some of Dustin's best non-screams post-hiatus.
I do miss the clean/crisp production from earlier in their career, but great to see the boys still going at it strong
It took me awhile to figure out the groovy bass in Albatross reminds me a lot of Cataracts. Both great songs.
Not sure what a band like them is supposed to do to in this day & age. What other avenues are there other than podcasts?
Yeah we need the guys to go on GMA and Ellen. Maybe make the rounds on Family Feud or First Take. Shame they were nowhere near the start of the NFL season last night. Big missed opportunity.
Not Thrice news, strictly speaking, but I couldn't find a dedicated thread, and Riley loves these lads (not to mention Thrice toured with them last year): Town Portal has a new single "Crushed Under Something Gentle" out today, off their upcoming album Grindwork, which releases November 7th. Really enjoyed their last two records, so stocked to hear what they've cooked up.
I've been getting into modern color, and downward they are pretty dope I can't wait to see them opening for thrice also almost three weeks to go!
the downward lp2 is one of the best albums i've heard this year. still haven't listened to modern color yet.
