The Beggars comparison has got my excitement up a level. Will be listening to this tonight. I also definitely love Major/Minor but Beggars is my favorite Thrice album for sure.

Is this album expected to get radio air-play? I'm just asking because I haven't been active in the criticisms online.

I’m pleasantly surprised by this album. Major/minor was something I couldn’t get into and I was expecting similar hurdles but this album is amazing. It mixes the best parts of Artist in the Ambulance, Vheissu and Beggars to create something that is both familiar and forges a new direction.

Solid review, definitely agree with the points made! 2016 has already been an amazing year: Saosin, Thrice, Architects, Blaqk Audio, The 1975, Polyenso - all amazingly solid releases. I don’t think I can choose one AOTY, maybe 10.

  4. I'm trying to imagine why someone would put a gun to your head to make you pick a favorite Thrice album.

  5. I haven't heard anything from new Architects yet but I might buy it tomorrow after the glowing reviews I've read today. Plus I've seen them live and know how solid they are.

  6. I loved M/m immediately and it's possibly my favorite overall. Beggars is up there at the top, but took much longer to grow on me. I'm curious whether this album will fall under "immediate" or "grower," as well. I'll love it no matter what (because I'm THAT biased toward this band), but still.

    Sleekest of beaks. So Good.

It fell under immediate for me, Hurricane is one hell of an opener. I love M/M too never realized a lot of people hated it.

  8. I've sadly been overly aware of how many people dislike M/m. Oh well. I've been too stoked for "Hurricane" since learning that the original teaser clip was from the album opener. It's seem so...unlike an opener? That riff always felt like a "Treading Paper" type riff to me, something that would anchor the middle of an album, not open things up. I won't be hearing the record until tomorrow afternoon, so...yeah. AAAAHHHHHH

My brother demanded I list my top 5 from the new album after only a day with it so here it goes.

    Hurricane
    The Window
    Death From Above
    Stay With Me
    The Long Defeat

With all due respect, I feel like on a lot of the reviews I've read lately, on different sites, the album that's getting a review is always the band's best ever or since X. I have mostly disagreed with those opinions and I'll probably disagree with this one too.

I've made my peace with the fact that this record will probably be my least favorite Thrice album since I started listening to them. Ever since Beggars, which pretty much means Beggars, M/m, and now this one, they've been on a path towards a more straightforward sound in terms of style or complexity, and more middle-of-the-road in terms of heaviness. I've enjoyed the last records but this one may be too much of the same streak. If Death From Above is any indication there will still be lots for me to enjoy on this one. Love hearing the baritones, even if the studio production always understates the heaviness IMO.

I've also come to terms with the fact that they'll probably never have screams like on Vheissu or Fire again, although Dustin stills sings with loads of aggression, so it's not like it's totally gone.

The only thing I wish for this band is that they continue to experiment and try new things, built on their 3 pillars: intensity, melody and sincerity. /cheesy

EDIT: giving it my first listen. Enjoying it a lot so far, very diverse, the songs mix heavy guitars with catchy/soulful vocals, my comment on the heavy guitars not feeling heavy enough IMO stands.
Although, it's weird to hear Dustin with so many overdubbed chorus vocals (or whatever you call it).
These songs will be great live (like M/m, probably sound better than the studio versions), and a great addition to the set.
2nd Edit: woah, Stay With Me is astonishingly, unabashedly poppy. Not sure how I feel about this one.
Final edit: Yep, Thrice is still my favorite band, after 10 years. They're awesome.

We talk too much / We talk in circles

The first studio video used "Death from Above." The first sound from this album was a ten second clip of the main Hurricane riff. So, he was referencing that first teaser.

I also didn't think it felt like an opener, but I think you'll come around to it in context. I did.

I think you kind of almost have to take the praise as the positive stuff he said and the readjust vibe you're getting as his addressing of some of the stuff that's been said. From what I read it feels like he's giving it some pretty major praise. To address the other stuff is like cutting off a ton of those incoming "but it sounds like this and I don't like it" comments that might come if he didn't address it. Sometimes I guess it's better to just air it out in the review haha. At least that's why I would address the criticisms in a review haha.

This is a good review IMO. I'm not sure I totally agree with it, but it is well written and makes some good points.

I'm through four listens now and I see this as a top two Thrice record for me. It's got everything I love about the band, but with so many new intricacies in it. Just waiting on my vinyl now.

Be kind; everyone is on their own journey.

Gotta say that I really like reading the review PRIOR to the release, and then circling back after listening today, and re-reading your review. Love the album, and grateful for the direction they took after a subpar Major/Minor...similar vibes to Beggars first listen for me.

Good review, although your assessment of their previous albums seems a bit biased. Major/Minor was objectively more well-received from a critical perspective than Beggars so to call Major/Minor lackluster and Beggars a masterpiece seems odd. It's obviously your opinion but in the future I'd try to stress that a little more rather than plainly stating subjective assessments like they're universal facts.

  23. Just made my way through the whole album for the first time - blown away. Been looking forward to reading this review but wanted to wait until AFTER I heard the album, so that it didn't sway my thoughts one way or another (awesome review, by the way).

I haven't had this strong of positive feelings for a piece of music in a while. I can't wait to have all the "a-ha!" moments as I uncover all the little nuances and intricacies that Thrice have been known to throw in their songs. Damn Thrice, damn.

Isn't it kind of a given though that reviews are biased? The point of a review is literally to give an opinion. In fact, a review would seem less helpful to me if it lacked the context of the author's previous feelings on a band and their catalog

Edit: I'd also argue that from a fan perspective, especially over time, Beggars has been widely accepted as their best work (much more so than Major/Minor), but that's besides the point.

  25. Thanks for reading! Glad you're enjoying the album B-)
