There's a dilemma here in that this both feels like a knowing wink kind of joke referencing the past and also tempting fate/baiting the hook.

Can we just not do this?

I wish there was some actual god butchering. Gorr only kills one hod on screen and it was within the first five minutes. Thor almost kills as many gods. I know they said a lot of stuff was left on the cutting room floor, but Bale was one of the best parts about this movie. Wish we got more. a lot of the humor didn’t really land for me this go around. There is a lot of tonal shifts.

    still enjoyed it though.

Yeah, the comics have farrrrr more butchering lol. The bit where he beheads a shadow monster was dope though.

He did kill more it just wasn’t shown. They could have thrown one more kill in there for fun.

See, I don't think it really had a lot of tonal shifts. There was the beginning, and then one other moment with Gorr where things got dark, but for the most part, it was 90% goofy and zany.

My main problem is just the lack of direction in this phase, and the fact that the multiverse exists. Stakes seem low, and it seems like now there will always a multiverse related out for anything that isn't well received. The early marvel movies were either outstanding standalones, or served as an important bridge for later storylines. Now it seems that we're getting middle of the road standalones. There could be some marvel/superhero fatigue, but there's only so much you can do with a superhero arc that maintains the core aspects of the genre.

I always think the tone shifts in cycles too... Ragnarok was great as it was a counterpoint to the usual stuffy serious Thor. Same reason that after the dark knight trilogy, the next super hero hits were on the lighter side. People get burned out when everything is one note (dark or light). At some point, we'll get a super serious dark Marvel movie because the producers will decide that the goofiness has gone too far.

I really appreciate your writing and in general, I agree, but no single scene perfectly encapsulated this movie’s tone issues like when Gorr rips the head off an eel in an attempt to be cute/menacing/idkwtf??

I think Gorr was teed off that the kids were praising Thor for cutting off someone's head, and wanted to scare/mock them a little.

He hates gods. He doesn't know who Thanos is or the story behind the beheading. He just knows a god killed someone and the god is being praised for it.

I refuse to believe Gorr doesn’t know who Thanos is lol. I just don’t think he cares much about him either.

Maybe, but on the other hand, why would he know who Thanos is?

He's the single highest being in the galaxy? His reputation for slaughter precedes him. No chance Gorr is knowledgeable enough about the universe to travel from realm to realm slaughtering god's on a whim and doesn't know of thanos.

I do not understand getting upset about someone liking or not liking something (unless they’re being weird or pushy about it). The discourse for Marvel movies has always been kind of polarizing, whether it’s on Chorus or irl. If you liked it, that should be all that matters.

Operating under the premise that studios are actively listening to fan feedback (debatable), I can understand getting passionate when you feel like Marvel is going in a direction you don't like (especially when they have such a monopoly on summer movies). A movie is just a movie, but if you've watched all 20/30 something marvel movies, and are noticing a trend that you don't like, then it's understandable to be more reactionary to most liking it, as it could leave you feeling left out and tepid about what's to come. I'm not a huge Marvel fan (movies or comics), so I can watch each movie with a pretty even attitude, but I completely understand those who can't.

EDIT: Or vice versa, loving something you want to see more of but seeing a reaction that makes you think you won't get it.

yeah, the bolded is squarely what i was referring to, i think the other person was also. rather not get into it too much to avoid opening any can of worms but speaking from what i've witnessed it's kind of disappointing how just saying anything mcu is good means potentially getting told you're "wrong" or some shit with minutes practically. it also doesn't exactly do much to endear anyone to a differing view

We don't know if he already knew where to find the other gods or if the sword was leading him to them, although I presume it's actually the latter.

Earth didn't know about Thanos until he invaded and Gorr was just a religious nomad on a dying world. There's absolutely no reason for him to have any knowledge about what boils down to intergalactic politics.

I said Us was bad and within minutes was told it’s good. I don’t think this is an MCU thing or only goes that way lol
