I totally understand the fatigue but I just enjoy the heck out of these movies regardless, so I'm pumped for Thursday night.
I’m really dreading the dialogue considering most of the reviews mention how cheesy and forced the one-liners/quips are. Probably my least favorite thing about MCU films.
Just to start it off with a plus: Portman owns the role. She is the clear emotional core of the film and gets to kick ass while carrying that burden. But…like with MOM, this is at a break-neck pace. 10 extra minutes wouldn’t have hurt. The tone is also all over the place, which is what I expected when Gorr was announced as the villain in a rom-com. It was still highly entertaining and rewatchable with a breath of fresh air that’s free of the latest multiverse or cameo fiesta. Also surprisingly self contained despite the Guardians being in it. You could rip this from the MCU and nothing would be lost….for this or the MCU in general. Uncle Thor is great. I’m looking forward to more of that in the inevitable sequel If Ragnorak wasn’t so great this wouldn’t have appeared to be so low. The humor doesn’t land this time around. Phase 4 thus far, imo Shang-Chi Loki Hawkeye No Way Home Ms Marvel Moon Knight WandaVision Thor 4 Black Widow Falcon and Winter Solider MOM Eternals
”Taika was pretty gutsy about just letting us seriously change the plot because of certain choices we made in the scene and certain places we decided to go,” the actress said. “Some of it was right and some of it was not right. Some of it ended up in the film, some of it did not, but it was pretty incredible to get to play and to get to have that latitude in the emotional stuff, as well as the comedic stuff.” That’s some intense improv
yeah, tonally this is no better than jojo rabbit (which had other problems too) but this is okay. first act/half its all jokes but then it takes a rather jarring turn that makes me nervous for how certain things will land if watch it a second time. much of this is good, it’s that nothing is as good as it COULD be that stings. funniest part of all this was either the reservation dogs commercial before the film (taika connection!) or the throngs of people standing just outside the exit hall in anticipation for the requisite post credit scene
thought this was a hot fucking mess, and I loved Ragnarok. the middle act with Zeus might be one of the worst sections of any marvel film
In a comments section of the Polygon review a poster claims that they heard from someone close to the production of this movie that Taika and others were coked out of their minds during the making of this causing everything to go off the rails, which could explain it being the mess that it is (and someone like Taika just doing too many things at once). Take that with a grain of salt, but it wouldn't surprise me. Also, I think I have come to terms with the fact that I just don't like Taika's work. The only project of his I truly love is What We Do in the Shadows (and that feels more of a Jermaine Clement thing). He truly was one of the worst things about Free Guy, which again was already a terrible terrible movie to begin with.
so question to those who have seen it. I have tickets to see it tomorrow and if I have Marvel fatigue (mainly due to the humour), how much will this movie annoy me?
Phaynes really is the best barometer for people who are tired of Marvel's shit. Meanwhile, I fully intend to gobble it up like a pig and his trough. Won't be until at least the weekend after opening weekend though, for reasons.
I was never one to succumb to Marvel fatigue until these past two years. I feel like the biggest factors are that nothing has really blown me away (I've generally enjoyed everything, but not to the level of things pre-pandemic) and that it just feels like everything is introducing new characters just so they can get their own properties, rather than at least having a relatively noticeable overarching story/threat. Seeing this tonight with my 14 year old brother.
I think I'm having an easier time with the films than the tv shows. I haven't been able to finish any of them outside of Moon Knight (which was even rough). I checked out of Ms. Marvel halfway through ep 4.
The only film I've seen since Endgame is Spiderman. And I was all-in on the MCU up to that point. Whoops!
Post credits chat: Well well well. Roy fucking Kent is in the MCfuckingU. That article that everyone rubbished turned out to be true haha. Also was not expecting to see Heimdall at the end. Thought Idris Elba hated being in the MCU? Guess one last day of filming with the promise of never having to come back again was enough for him!
I fucking loved it. But I am an MCU fan boy who will defend it to the death, so I feel I was always going to! Also, If you have Marvel fatigue, just bin it off. If I stop enjoying a film series or TV show or podcast, I just give it up. No point going online to moan about how I don’t like something anymore. I just stop watching.
Just looked it up. Elba doesn't hate the MCU, he hated The Dark World, as did everyone. He had fun with Ragnarok.
