possibly controversial opinion ahead: i looooove out of the vein but i think it suffers a little from an identity crisis. like, "good man" is a weird non-entity of a closer for a band that's usually pretty good at closers, and i'll never like or really understand what "wake for young souls" is trying to do ("self righteous," however, is good, idgaf). but it's still one of their strongest collections of songs. "faster," "danger," "my hit and run," "company," "palm reader," all absolutely massive songs
OOTV strikes me as one of those albums that was pushed back/reworked/rewritten so many times it kinda lost itself a bit. hard to know for sure without knowing what it would have sounded like in, say 2001/2. still who's even complaining when it gave us My Hit and Run
Out of the Vein always struck me as this whirlwind of emotions in the wake of a tumultuous relationship. For me, it actually holds together as an album better than anything else they've ever done.
Personally, it seems I’m always drawn to a band’s ‘black sheep’ album - it may not be smooth, but there’s something about the diversity of styles and approaches (and typically oversharing-just-a-little lyricism) on those kinds of records that’s immensely appealing to me. Out of the Vein certainly fits that bill. That said, word up to @unbornwhiskey for standing up for “Self-Righteous,” such an underrated, unjustly maligned track.
I love Wake For Young Souls Never thought 3EB could pull off a straight up country tune, and the little guitar flubs throughout make it sound raw and authentic. Great lyrics also Coincidentally I love All The Souls for pretty much the same reasons
oh i do love "all the souls" but then i love every single song on dopamine and it's my third favorite 3eb album after blue and the s/t
1) Wake For Young Souls is a masterpiece, and I wish current 3EB still wrote songs like this. 2) My Hit And Run is also a masterpiece, but seems very divisive. Believe lots of hardcore fans hate it for reasons I've never understood. Probably my favorite song on the album.
Crystal Baller, My Hit and Run, Palm Reader are all TOP tier songs, and the rest are all great. Album is a winner
I actually really like "Good Man" and have always thought it was the perfect closer to that album. Captures a certain type of melancholy resignation so well.
Good Man is, good, and so is My TIme in Exile The only misses on that album for me are Another Life, Self Righteous (dear god, the talking at the beginning drives me nuts) and to a much lesser extent, Can't Get Away.
