I wouldn't hold my breath for that to happen. I was confused about the Absolutely Kosher branding on the single until I learned they're relaunching in association w this release. Groovy. https://www.carcolors.net/news/happyannounceday
There will be NFT's of a select number of alternate versions of songs (I know they have fallen - or plummeted, really - out of fashion in the last year or two but I'm still really excited by them, by some cool under-utilized opportunities they present.
it’s amazing how little i give a shit about this after everything that’s happened. anyway. amazing and in character for him to announce the record without releasing any new music
It seems you can't listen to it via bandcamp anymore? I got the DL and now it looks like that option has gone by???
honestly just reading the lyrics to "old death" will give you a very good idea of the song. it's excellent. b-sides are cool too. EDIT: didn't realize they'd taken the lyrics down as well. classic Charles!!!!
I am extremely over Charles and his bullshit. And honestly it's to the point where I'm not sure how much I'm interested in this single that he announced six weeks in advance which, again, I will believe exists when I can listen to it.
the NFT bit is a hilarious wrinkle but totally in keeping with his awkward relationship with release formats and the internet
truly wish i gave a shit about any of this but just cannot. never even listened to aeon station, whole thing bums me the hell out
I want to laugh about the buildup being to the month and a half in advance announcement of just the single with no full album release date or news announced yet, and I do think it’s a perfectly funny and sad detail of all this, but I would encourage people to read his post from yesterday before totally dunking on him. (Aside from the NFT thing, fuckk that lol.) Really frames the crippling perfectionism thing in a way I think many people can empathize with.
I am sympathetic to Charles’ struggle with mental health issues of course—I’ve dealt with some similar stuff myself actually. But I just can’t with his posts. Every sentence has a (more on that below) in the middle of it and I’m really put off by him unilaterally declaring an end to the Wrens and that they’re not gonna rerelease The Meadowland, etc. I don’t know the guy but it’s hard for me to care about his art at this point.
meanwhile the statement from team Aeon Station is both catty and a little weird in its own way: Though Charles has decided to leave the band, it does not mean that the band has broken up. 3/4 of The Wrens continue to work together writing, recording music, and playing shows as Aeon Station. Who knows what the future may hold for The Wrens. The other Wrens wish Charles success on his solo project. Thank you to everyone who has supported the band through the years.
one of the things i loved most about the wrens was the push-pull between charles’ and kevin’s songwriting. kevin can’t write a “i’ve made enough friends” but charles can’t write a “rest your head”. listening to an album that is just charles songs… god, sounds so depressing will prob still listen if it comes out for real but the whole thing is so fucking frustrating. i also struggle with debilitating perfectionism but at a certain point (especially if other ppl are involved) i have to say “fuck it”
yeah I don't think Kevin and the other guys have covered themselves in glory here either lol. but I definitely get them not wanting to allow Charles to declare the Wrens dead without their input. it just sucks.
i get being frustrated but…idk. i’m on board i’m excited. things change people change and that’s life.
people are being kinda weird. How many listened to "Old Death"? It completely justifies allllllll the bullshit. It's incredible.
I haven't seen it pop up anywhere so I'm assuming only a small number nabbed it. It reminds me of empty country in some respects (some mutual influence at work perhaps) but really it just sounds like a (nicely) finished version of the demo that's already floating around. In the intervening years he's obviously tinkered with the words as much as (if not more than) the music. EDIT: did not notice that now I am also doing the parentheticals thing
