Do you play guitar? It's hard to avoid that slide entirely and not just have a straight up pause in between every chord. You can punch in chord by chord, but that doesn't end up sounding very natural. On a recording that sound is amplified by the compression applied to tracks. For me, it's part of the sound of instrument, but I understand why it would bother someone.
Loving these new version. TWY will always be my favorite band and I’m sure the next album will be confirmed heat rocks.
I mean imperfections can really make the song in a lot of cases. "Across the Sea" by Weezer wouldn't be the same if you couldn't hear the floor creak at the beginning when Rivers gets up from the piano and goes over to record the vocals and guitar because the whole album was recorded live in one room. The slide isn't exactly the same thing because it's not really an imperfection, it's unavoidable in acoustic tracks most of the time but it's still part of the natural sound of the recording process.
Really temped to buy tickets to the NYC matinee but I have no idea if I'll be working yet or not. Ugh.
Listening to this now finally. Loved Earnest Hemingway, although there's an annoying scratching sound on one part of record for the first half of the song or so. Very excited for tomorrow!
By contrast, it can enhance a song. Modern Baseball's Pothole is a hugely emotional song for me, and the sliding makes it feel so natural, like Jake is playing just to you. I love it.
I have dabbled but never with acoustic/electric and never thought about the recording process. I hear it on some acoustic songs and not on others and so i thought it was either intentional or a mistake. I appreciate the input from you and others and will try to see if I can let it slide. Someone pointed it out to me one time and ever since then it's been annoying me.
It was super weird not to mosh at a TWY show! What did you think of the openers? The Obsessives were kinda meh, but I enjoyed Surfer Rosa (funny video too), I missed Jetty Bones, and Laura Stevenson was great.
I must have missed Surfer Rosa (?). I got there while Jetty Bones were playing and they were great. The Obsessives and Laura were fun as well! I've moshed at enough TWY shows to really appreciate this tour and this side of the band. Love them.
Oh Surfer Rosa is a song that The Obsessives play. And I know what you mean about getting to see a different side of TWY...it was cool to see that they still brought the same passion to playing acoustically. I thought Dan's comment about being able to wear a watch (without it being destroyed) was pretty funny too.
Finally sat down properly with this, how great is Coffee Eyes on this? I LOVE the guitar in this song.
I think I prefer this version of You In January to the original. There's something so nostalgic about this, like it feels so perfect in this form.
