I'd be happy with WSP, Came Out Swinging, and one other pre-TGG song every set. Holding out hope that they'll play You're Not Salinger at some point when I see them but I don't see that happening any time soon
They dropped Salinger after Suburbia tour I believe. Maybe the played it on a few TGG shows. They’ve moved Came Out Swinging to the pre-encore song. I’d imagine it stays there but I really liked when Ocean Grew Hands was in that slot. Then open encore with Came Out Swinging if they are keeping it.
I saw them play on the Sister Cities tour in London and they played Came Out Swinging in the middle of the set and it felt so weird and out of place. Definitely only works as an opener or a closer
it ignites the room whenever it's played but yeah I'm glad they moved it to the encore when I saw them in Madrid in 2019
Came Out Swinging no longer in the setlist would be so weird. I always thought of it as the Wonder Years song. Like every band has that one quintessential song and for The Wonder Years that is it lol
I remember when I went to the Suburbia album release show in Philly and they didn't play Came Out Swinging I was so mad lol Then I drove out to see them in Grand Rapids a few months later and they played it for the first time and opened the set with it and it ruled hard But yeah it wouldn't feel like a TWY set without that song
I hope Swinging stays as the closer forever. It’s good as the opener as well, especially when they did it for the boot & saddle show, but elite as a closer. Definitely felt wrong in the middle of the set. Hoping they keep a few other upsides and suburbia songs going forward as well. They’re just so much fun live.
For me, the song is literally called "Came Out Swinging". It's an opener, not a closer. Cigarettes and Saints and The Ocean Grew Hands to Hold Me are both way better closers imo.
yeah i havent seen them close with that one before but it really does not strike me as the kinda song that would work as a set ender
It's their anthem pretty much.... how is it not an appropriate closer? I think it can go anywhere in their set but I don't see how it's not appropriate closing a show and the whole crowd pretty much leaving pumped up.
it makes sense to me in terms of, like, we the audience come out swinging from the philly venue back into the world (presumably caked in stale beer and sweat, which was how I left the upsides/suburbia show basically)
I think literally it makes more sense as an opener too but it's also a great closer in my book. also like that ^^ logic too tbf
I remember the Boot and Saddle show in 2018 being their first show in a while and the first since they had done a Burst and Decay tour so nobody really knew what to expect. I turned to my friend right before they came on and said something like "I wonder if this is going to be relatively tame." Then they launched into Came Out Swinging and it was one of the sweatiest nights of my life.
Seeing people talk about that Boot & Saddle show almost brings a tear to my eye. Might have been my favorite Wonder Years show, at a tiiiny venue, right before the Eagles won the Super Bowl a few days later :')
I've seen them close with Came Out Swinging and Cigarettes & Saints a bunch, and as much as I like the latter as part of the set, it should always be Came Out Swinging if you ask me. When I saw them in Providence just before Christmas, they did Saints last and while it was great, it just doesn't have the energy that Swinging does.
