NCTH or TGG? I'm listening on my shitty laptop speakers but I do notice NCTH being a little more "muddled" I guess than the other ones I listened to today. I don't like what Soupy is doing with his voice on a lot of TGG, specifically the first track.

NCTH. common opinion here is it could benefit from a remix/remaster job.

Interesting, I'm too dumb to typically tell if it's a bad mix or not so I probably won't have much to offer there. The songs so far haven't necessarily been super interesting, but I think the lyrics are undeniably better than what came on TGG. "I Don't Like Who I Was Then" is good, and "Cigarettes & Saints" is probably their best song from a lyrical standpoint.

People love to argue about mix and master quality like they're about to advise Travis Barker on his next Pop Punk project lol

Definitely think my only qualm about Sister Cities is the inconsist sound of Raining In Kyoto. Love the song, but just feels like the mixing/mastering/idk is inconsistent throughout that song. Pyramids right after is a world of difference. Love that album though and albeit not my favorite, I think it is their best.

I apparently have the world’s worst ears and have no issues with NCTH, Sister Cities, or even Tell All Your Friends.

  7. I mean, as someone who has worked on a ton of recorded music over the past 10 years, I certainly have some opinions about the mixes of their records. I really do think NCTH and SC would benefit from remixes to have more separation between instruments, smooth out the eq (Sister Cities can be really uneven in the heavier sections, especially the cymbals and bass), and add some more headroom to the masters (the albums have different faults imo so it's hard to generalize). But I really like how The Upsides, Suburbia, and TGG sound, and this single definitely has a mix reminiscent of TGG.

Edit: to be clear, a lot of stuff about a mix can be subjective and I'm just stating how I feel about the records!

I know nothing about mixing or producing or what is wrong, but I do know that TWY are my favourite band yet I struggle to make it all the way through NCTH because if how it sounds. Particularly the vocals.

SC I have no issues with.

Maybe I just don't have an ear for it, but I never really heard what people describe about the NCTH mix. Still the album I revisit the least outside of 3-4 songs

NCTH sounds like someone pressed a bad Limewire rip to vinyl, and then recorded it on an iPhone.

  11. I've come to not mind how NCTH sounds because I love the songs so much (with one exception - I'd cut "Stained Glass Ceilings"), and I think it has their most interesting performances and some of Dan's best lyrics.

As with any art I always try and think about what the artist is trying to convey. Do people who don't like the production on those records think it's just plain poor production, or is there an acknowledgment that that's what the band is going for?

In my opinion it's always sounded like the band have shot for a raw, sloppy, 'live' sound on their albums and I dig it. I think I remember Soupy talking about how they write and record their music with playing the songs live in mind, as in they don't like backing tracks etc.

    Y'all are fun.

It takes a lot for me to say a mix is bad. I'll usually take more issues with a specific instruments and how they were recorded or post-processed.

The only record that comes to mind, in recent time, that I would say has an overall mix I dislike is Elway's For The Sake of The Bit, and I still love to listen to it.

Didn't Dan mention a while back they were gonna get NCTH remastered at some point? If so, I wonder if that is still in the cards.

We reach for the longest shadow

I think Dan has expressed slight annoyance at how records sounded the last time he heard them vs. how they sounded when the mastered copies came out, but that it was too late in the game to do much about it. I don't think it was intentional the way letlive.'s The Blackest Beautiful was.

Honestly I think part of the problem is that there is just too much stuff TWY try to cram into songs. They have 3 guitarist and probably feel like they need all 3 to have recorded parts on each song, which just isn't really necessary for their brand of pop punk, not including keys that are there too sometimes.

Agreed. Dan's vocals, the crescendo of the entire song leading up to Jason's feature, the lyrics. Pretty damn perfect imo
