Every album of theirs is my favorite in a different way - The Upsides will always have that really emotional, nostalgic factor, Suburbia has that raw pop punk sound done so well, TGG has their absolute hookiest material, NCTH is the oddball with some of their darkest songs, and Sister Cities has their most innovative songwriting to date. I love this band so much.
It's nice to know I still get goosebumps when I hear a new Wonder Years song for the first time. Enjoying this so far and I'm sure it'll only grow on me with more listens. Can't wait to see it live.
hopeless' MO lately has been teaser single about a month out then record announcement w the second single
I saw some one say that the video for this is coming at 1PM EST, so maybe video+announcement then? hopefully!
Song is pretty decent. Not sure it’s what I’d want from this band though, it feels like a regression compared to Sister Cities
Soupy's voice sounds really good on this, like a more developed version of how he sounded on the first three records rather than the relatively one dimensional performance on NCTH and SC. I like him on all the records but he just sounds really dynamic and full of energy here.
I always change my mind when choosing a favourite TWY record, but I loved catching the recent Upsides/Suburbia livestream, and this seems like a great progression of that in the way TGG was. They're just the best
This new song is okay, I guess. Feels like a bit of a regression in terms of sound. As far as the discography discourse, I will stand by the hot take that Suburbia is sort of boring and the mixing on it is so much worse than any of their other albums, even NCTH.
I didn't realize there were qualms about the production or mixing on Sister Cities. always thought it demonstrated a noticeable improvement
It's mixed and produced really well, the issue is the mastering. The quiet parts are too quiet and the loud parts are too loud.
Personally I can resonate more with say, losing someone to addiction, than I can to hating college or feeling awkward at a party
I still certainly enjoy the latter from time to time, but, yeah, at this point in my life the former is more resonant for me and I'm glad they've realized that (and I think matured in that direction in a very natural way) rather than making the same album, thematically and musically, over and over again The issue, for me, is that Sister Cities seemed like a logical end to that transformation and I'm really not sure where they go from there. I trust them to figure it out though
Yeah, I get it if some of the later stuff doesn't hit the same spot for people. But I wouldn't want to hear the same stuff they were writing 13 or 14 years ago. I was much less interested in hearing The Upsides live earlier this year than I was Suburbia. The first time I listened to Sister Cities front to back I actually thought "maybe this band just isn't for me anymore" but in the years since I've come around to it and It Must Get Lonely is probably top 3 TWY for me.
I mean, when the opening song on your most recent record is about seeing a family member die from thousands of miles away... I'd much rather they take themselves seriously than phoning in their lyrics and themes. fake as fuck. I'd like to think the fanbase has matured with them but there are dozens of bands who can't stick the landing like these did.
Can we acknowledge that this shouldn't be a binary view? It doesn't have to be either death by addiction or annoyed at the house party. I personally don't want to rehash the more painful parts of adult life through music constantly.
do you have a problem with how it sounds like a lot of people here seem to? which I get to a certain extent but I don't mind bc the songs are great and yeah I'd be inclined to say TGG is their best record tbh but Sister Cities is up there
