He also mentions that he's "fallen behind" in Laura & the Beehive, which could be a call back to the same phrase from Passing Through a Screen Door
That’s okay! I love it a lot personally due to how bleak it is lyrically. Dan wrote it at a really dark place in his life from what I can remember from interviews and I resonate a lot with “These aren’t the vultures that were circling just yesterday”. It’s my favorite call back of theirs. To me, it’s noting how there were inconveniences in his life, but this is far more than that. That hits hard for me. The airbag line is super direct yet powerful. It has so much weight and dread behind it for such a simple observation.
Just listened to Patsy Cline again for the first time in years and do not like it nearly as much as I used to. Still probably in my top three from that album, which is saying something lol
Bluest Things on Earth is the best song on that album. I wish it’s mix sounded as good as this album, though.
Instantly recognized this on my first listen, glad it wasn't just me I feel like ranking TWY albums is a weird exercise because The Upsides was exactly what I needed at the time, but it's not really what I need anymore in my 30's so it's at the bottom of my list. Suburbia holds up a bit better though. It's still gonna be tough to top TGG for me, I think that album is just a masterpiece.
There are times I think TGG loses its luster or it’s more nostalgia that’s putting it so high and then the chorus of Cul-de-Sac hits me and I’m ready to say it’s one of my five favorite records of all time.
Thank you everyone for your kind and insightful words/sentiments in regards to my situation. The support means the world to me. I've been around since the AP days, and this is one of the very few places on the internet where I feel surrounded by people who are authentic and genuinely care for others. I had my feelings bottled up for over two months now, and I have felt a big sense of relief since writing that post. I won't be afraid to share in the future, as I'm coming to realize it's good to let it out and let others in on what's going on in your life.
I’ve been on a TWY deep dive since this came out and I feel deeply solidified in a few opinions: 1. this is easily their best album since TGG 2. TGG is still their best album 3. This band is at their best when the tempo is fast, rhythm section is tight, the vocal melodies are well-defined, and Dan’s lyrics are in that clear storytelling mode. That’s what makes me love this album so much, and why I still can’t find it in me to be head over heels for Sister Cities
Still waiting on the deluxe copy to ship. I actually went to my local record store and bought another variant cause I dig the album so much.
Got my pre-order yesterday, and it was completely bent. Reached out and they didn't have any spares and they refunded me. I'll check out a local record store after the hurricane passes and see if there's an indie variant.
Love you too man :) I tried listening to You're The Reason within the context of what you've gone through and I just couldn't comprehend any of it as it's simply something I'd never want to experience. So to make something positive out of it, I now see that song as like future me talking to present me and it totally works in this narrative aswell! So thanks for that!
Dan said they are playing 6 new songs. I’m guessing 4 singles plus Doors Painted Shut and I Don’t Want the World to End I honestly want an album play and an encore of a few TGG songs.
I can't decide which album tracks I want the most off this Think Songs About Death would kill live, Paris of Nowhere would get the crowd going, Doors Painted Shut would be an amazing opener
I think they’ll save Don’t Want the World to End for a different tour, feel like the 6th song will be Cardinals II
I’d be down for Cardinals II but Soupy has said his favorite is I Don’t Want the World to End. They can cut Summer Clothes IMO
They've been playing I Don't Like Who I Was Then as opener recently which is... I like that song but I don't think it's a set opener lol
this feels like a 2nd song kinda track “how’s everyone doing? (“woo!!!!”) we’re the wonder years and i dont like who i was then”
I don't know, I was surprised to see them open with it at Riot Fest, but the crowd was actually really into it and I thought it worked quite well in that spot
