same here. They’re ok. But I don’t relate to dad stuff and something about it just feels off to me. Im sure there will be at least a couple tracks from the album I’ll dig though so holding out hope.
I'm 35 and I'm in my parents basement. Just a Philadelphia teenager, 35 with my whole life in front of me. College is dumb and I don't want to work at Home Depot this summer. Ramen noodles are good, Mom and Dad I'm not eating dinner with youuuuuuuu tonight. Go back to that Wonder Years! C'mon! /s
I think it’s fair that some of the topics/subjects on this album may not appeal to everyone. I think they really have pushed the parent narrative in the press. I mean Pitchfork thought the topics were uncharacteristic enough of our scene to write a feature on it. Having two kids and struggling with all of that, this will likely hit right in the sweet spot. Hopefully there are some jams for everyone on the album!
while I've skipped Summer Clothes - from what I've been told it's a little more AW20 than you'd expect so I'm intrigued. might fuck around and pitch to review this
I was engaged and starting my professional career when Dan dropped "I'm 26, all the people I graduated with all have kids, all have wives, all have people who care if they come home at night". I didn't directly relate to that sentiment, and was probably closer to the group he was talking about than him, but loved the lines anyway and still love the song. I hope people who aren't in this exact phase of life can find stuff to latch onto.
Sometimes when my brain doesn’t connect with music I sort of look for reasons to justify why exactly it’s not happening. This may or may not be the actual cause of it, or it’s just one of those things where my brain is just like “nah” for no particular reason.
Literally all that was said was "I don't relate to the Dad stuff" where did anyone try to dictate what TWY should write about?
it's an odd point to try to make though, do you only listen to music with lyrical content you can relate to?
I do think maybe it's more relevant to a TWY fan, because Dan's lyrics have always been a huge reason why some people became fans. I was in college during The Upsides and it's general eyeroll towards what was popular resonated with me for sure.
It doesn’t seem weird at all to have a greater barrier to clicking with music with intensely personal subject matter if you don’t relate to said subject matter, that strikes me as completely normal
I think it's definitely true that if you were around college age when The Upsides came out, and therefore have grown with the band as their lyrical content and references have grown, you're probably getting the most mileage out of it. I'm not sure what the experience would be like if you just run through all their albums now if you're in college without having the years gap to grow alongside them. The "I'm 26..." line resonated at the time and even though I am on the other side of it now, hearing that still brings me back to that moment and those feelings
I just wouldn't agree there was any real point being made. Someone said they didn't relate to the subject matter but that they were still excited to check out the rest of the album with an open mind. Nothing more. I think people are allowed that opinion as long as they're being respectful about it. As for your question, it depends on who we're talking about but yes relating to the lyrics is a big part of TWY appeal for a lot of people.
