    “It's a gang mentality
    It's a dangerous thing
They don't ask you to think
    Just to repeat after me
And assume you're too careless to look at it critically
You'll stop progress if it contradicts what you're told to believe”

This section is the one that’s always bothered me the most in that song. It absolutely reads like a generalized attack on the concept of religion. And like others have said, there’s plenty of churches out there that do not work like this. To use a quote from the song, it feels “short-sighted and naive”. Wait that’s a different wonder years song lol. Oops.

That song is better than their entire discography. One of the only songs I listen to by that band but it's dope as hell

I forgot they did actually have some good songs, lyrics are still, uh... not great.

Lords Prayer is pretty directly written towards a specific type of faux Christian who puts on an act and uses that belief to scare and push people into believing. I don’t think dan is saying the beliefs themselves are half formed but the beliefs of the ones doing the pushing, the ones that cherry pick the verses they like but couldn’t tell you if their life depended on it what John 3:17 or John 3:15 says. It’s not at all unreasonable for someone to view those types of believers as dangerous or reprehensible. When I was a waiter you’d be surprised how many church goers would come in Sunday after service and be awful, awful people.

That’s my interpretation obv and if you don’t like the song that’s your prerogative

Speaking of bands that don't need 3 guitars players, Man Overboard have to take that crown.

Odd we're talking about I Won't Say The Lord's Prayer, I got a flyer from the church with the Jesus Saves Me sign in the mail yesterday.

Man Overboard best content was their first 2 EPs and the acoustic EP after that every full length felt bloated and treading the same themes and sound.

I get what dans intent with lords Prayer is, I think he does a horrible job of conveying it and its just badly written

I mean it’s pretty obvious he’s not talking about the churches that actually do good deeds and are more open to helping LGBTQ/marginalized groups. It’s not hard to extrapolate that he’s pointing the crosshairs as the churches that are more rigid and toxic in their devotion to the more archaic teachings of, say, Old Testament laws.

No it doesn't and when she's all like "Yo guys can I hop on this for a second" I think that's the moment I immediately stopped liking the band.

If only they didn't have that corny ass intro for her guest spot in that song.

This Will Be The Death... is a fantastic album. One of my favorites in the genre.

the lyric is "push kids into half formed beliefs", which is hugely important context. he is referring to setting kids into religion before they're old enough to make the decision for themselves.

He's still calling the beliefs half formed though

And you can't discern if he means they're half formed because they're kids or half formed in general hence why I think the song is poorly written

  21. MOB had hits and hooks and Real Talk is well written from a musical perspective but this song also has what is arguably the worst lyric of the whole new wave of pop punk in “She was chillin, looking hot / in her bed smoking pot”

i don't know how "I wasn’t surprised she was chillin looking hot in her bed smoking pot, and I kept my distance, I was a good boy" is better than Hayley's intro into Few That Remain

no, i'd say there are far more problematic lyrics than that. Not good, but there's way worse.

I just think lords prayer is a pretty bad song. I don't like the melodies, or the lyrics despite agreeing somewhat with them

Right, I’d agree that he’s not explicitly attacking those churches. But I could easily see how someone who had any sort of religious belief would take offense to that particular section. It’s less about his intention, and more about the way that someone could certainly find that song condescending.
