Right there in the first verse he asserts the beliefs are "half formed"

I mean, it's mainly a song against organized religion and rejection of the superficial aspects of spiritual belief that he sees around the town, not necessarily attacking the specific people that subscribe to it. I don't see that being condescending at all.

Not all organized religion is bad, the song acts like it is

Im a die hard atheist but the song is condescending as hell to anyone who follows and believes in a religion

there are soooo many churches that are all inclusive and super lefty, I see churches all over Philly with signs that say all are welcome here in like twenty different languages and LGBQT flags, the stereotype of churches being super right wing and full of brain washed sheep just isn't true

Could be that he isn't referring to churches like that. Could be he's referring to a specific aspect of organized religion personified by the iconography he sees around the town in the song. I don't know, I never got that sense from it and I can't say I do now that it's been brought up to me for the first time either.

It's really not a generalized song when you read the lyrics, like at all. It's pretty clearly about a specific place and the feelings that place evokes in him.

  8. "if we're all just christians or lions i think i'd rather be on the side with sharper teeth"

this reads pretty judgmental to me with no real point as to why. like at least in other instances they blatantly call out bigotry and corruption etc but that whole song just seems to pick at the subject in a really shallow way. i guess you can read into what he's trying to say based on what you know about his positions from other sources but they're not there in the song at all

He does a horrible job of specifying the kind of church he is talking about. It's a very poorly written song

Yeah I just disagree with that. Sorry. I think it's written really well and conveys his feelings toward how organized religion can be perverted and turned into a mockery of what it supposedly preaches in a pretty effective and visceral way.

Ah, shit, I meant Captain Planet! Being real angry about the environment like a high schooler who just saw An Inconvenient Truth

Oh yeah! I totally should've realized that's what you meant. Shows how much I've thought about the record in years lol

That thing was my jam back when it came out though. Ah, to be 18 again.

Gaia Bleeds is still the best song to run to, along with ETID's Wanderlust.
