I do have a big appreciation for what it is and what it would become for the band. I go back to it sometimes if I want to analyze lyrics in reference to the rest of the discography, but I don't have any emotional connection to it.

 

Upsides sucks imo

 

Vocals on the upsides are actually painful to listen to

 

dan has said that he basically agrees so this isn't that hot take-y

 

idk if there has ever been a time in my life where i loved music as much as i loved The Upsides. i had just graduated high school and gotten my first apartment at 19, it was literally the soundtrack to the beginning of my adult life and following this band and that scene made me so many friends and fond memories. if i found it today it would do nothing for me but that doesn't really matter. i rarely revisit it but when i do it's a crazy feeling and a real time capsule.

i'll remember being super pissed at RFC for being months late on the deluxe preorders 4ever

 

i feel like i share that anecdote all the time but the "Upsides sucks" discussion comes up all the time, so there

 

I legit had no idea that there even was an "Upsides sucks" discussion before this thread. Makes me kinda sad, that record fucking rules.

Yeah they've grown and changed as a band since then, but it's still possible to appreciate a good record.

 

I didn’t hear Upsides until after discovering Suburbia, so it’s never impressed me whatsoever

 

WBPF is unlistenable tho

It's interesting to me how quickly I fell for this record considering it took me over two years to get into NCTH. Guess I've adapted to this new sound finally.

Side question; what songs (if any) on this album do you think would slot in well on other records? I think "Heaven's Gate (Sad & Sober)" is honestly the only one that wouldn't seem out of place on their earlier records.

 

About it sucking? That "rank your records" article doesn't really seem to support that. He definitely thinks WBPF sucks, though

 

I liked upsides when I heard it a little before suburbia but it just hasn't aged at all whereas suburbia has aged beautifully and both are going for the same sound pretty much

Also a direct quote. I don't think it's fair to say he thinks it sucks straight up. I think it's more like being embarrassed by yourself ten years ago, as we all are.

I think Heaven's Gate would definitely fit on NCTH. I also think that Orange Grove could fit somewhere in the back-half of TGG. As for the rest of this, I'm not sure anything would work on another album of theirs

I don’t think there’s any TWY album where I like every song, but I definitely KNOW every song on that album.

 

Has a set list popped up for this tour yet? The more I listen to this record, the more I want it to be half this record lol.

 

Set from the last night of their UK/Irish tour had 6 SC songs in the electric set so I'd expect similar for the US tour. The Wonder Years Setlist at The Empire Music Hall, Belfast

 

Agree with those two. Think We Look Like Lightning could be on TGG or NCTH too. The Ghosts of Right Now on NCTH.
