Pulling a @cshadows2887 and making a thread for a 60 year old band. The Who are an English rock band formed in 1964. Their classic line-up consisted of lead singer Roger Daltrey, guitarist and singer Pete Townshend, bass guitarist John Entwistle, and drummer Keith Moon. They are considered one of the most influential rock bands of the 20th century, selling over 100 million records worldwide and holding a reputation for their live shows and studio work. Discuss. I feel like they kinda get left behind in the Beatles/Stones/Zep conversation, but they're every bit as good imo. Their use of synths that early on with rock music is pretty much unprecedented.
absolutely. the thing i feel like that gets missed about this band is the entire genre of power pop basically ceases to exist without them. a quick one and tommy basically birthed the genre.
I've always found Tommy overrated (the ratio of filler that advances the "plot" to real songs is a bit skewed) but undeniably the knockouts on that set the template. They were also WAY more versatile than they get credit for when they get hyped as the loudest band ever. Any band who can do that kind of screaming rock but also "Squeeze Box", "I Can't Reach You", "You Better You Bet" and "Eminence Front" is pretty gifted
lol Pete Townshend says "thank God" Keith Moon, John Entwistle are dead: "They were fucking difficult to play with"
That's kind of been them for years now. They (mostly Pete) have really gone great lengths to try and trash their own legacy, but then trot out another tour for whatever reason and become cranky grandfathers taking potshots at each other in interviews. I love The Who, but this sucks because they clearly don't enjoy performing together at this point.
seeing them tonight with my dad! gonna be really full circle for him, he saw their first farewell tour back with the clash lmao
really emotional whirlwind of a night wew this is def it for them, and kudos to them for being willing to do one final tour even at their incredibly old age, but its not like seeing the stones where you go "oh theyll still be doing this for years". theyre definitely tired and worn. that said they gave it everything and holy fuck did roger sound shockingly unbelievable. they played a relatively shorter set i think beacuse he wanted to be able to sing as much as he could in the original keys. amazing
Good review. Must be a strange feeling knowing that is it. I'm seeing AC/DC tomorrow night which will be the last time and have been listening to them for 30 years so expect to feel the same as you did after the Who.
Show in Philly “postponed” tonight with no news as to why or a rescheduled date, wondering if I should buy a ticket for AC for this weekend instead.
I was there Tuesday night as well, and was blown away by how incredible Roger's scream was during "Won't Get Fooled Again". Wasn't missing my last chance to finally see them live. Agreed on the Stones comparison. I caught them at MetLife last summer and their respective shows couldn't have felt more different. The Stones are doing their thing at such a high level still with all the pomp and circumstance as if it's just business as usual. The Who show felt bittersweet since everyone involved seemed to truly understand it was a farewell. Also, we got four less songs than the opening night of the tour so it's possible Roger was starting to feel under the weather prior to our show considering Philly was cancelled next. Pure speculation it's Roger that was unwell since he had to step back from "Behind Blue Eyes" for water and restart the song.
