That line about the poison seeds from that one fruit was definitely a Chekhov's Gun. Also the whole thing where all the men in the family went to Duke, and all the women in the family went to UNC, now the younger brother is struggling to choose which one to go to with weird pressure from the dad to pick Duke is 100% a deeper metaphor about sexuality and gender.
Things did feel a bit explicitly spelled out in this first episode. Hopefully it’s just to set the scene.
