"Trilogy felt like a borderline hazardous excursion into Toronto’s seediest club backrooms. Kiss Land is more like the tedious conversation you have with the guy who’s obsessed with himself but doesn’t realize he’s burnt out; that the night is over and the club isn’t really that cool any more. " lol damn i really hated kiss land
i forgot "You can meet me in the room where the kisses ain’t free, you gotta pay with your body" is a real lyric
I feel like the idea of Kiss Land as "self parody" is wildly unsubstantiated. "All these girls try to tell me she got no love, but all these girls never ever got her blowjob" is a real line from one of his most celebrated songs. Again I really don't get it, like yeah it wasn't as good as Trilogy but to act like it was this absolute aberration is p ridiculous to me.
Give me literally any song off KL over that fucking Ed Sheeran collab every day of the week and twice on sundays
I think the length definitely hurts this album, there are some songs that easily could have been cut back. I would easily cut Reminder, True Colors, Attention, Nothing Without You, All I Know.
I think the first three are ones that you have to keep. Especially Reminder. You can't take that choice awards line out
How the fuck can you absolutely hate Kiss Land when it has the title track, Belong to the World, Wanderlust, and Pretty on it It's not even like it's that different from his other stuff
Can you explain why? Genuinely curious, not trying to be antagonistic or anything. The title track might be my favorite song by him period
for one the overall sound of the album wasnt as fully realized as the sound of any tape, something about kiss land's production is decidedly more skeletal than a lot of trilogy (not all), and the songwriting meanders without ever really being interesting besides a few moments here or there. most of the songs just plod along, a lot of it is quite sluggish. and then there's the lyrics, and while the lyrics werent exactly great on trilogy they took a huge, huge step down on kiss land. maybe its because he was treading the same territory and ran out of interesting ways to delve into the same topics, maybe the topics themselves got stale, probably both.
Eh, thanks for the explanation but I guess we'll just have to disagree here. I love the production on the songs I mentioned a few posts ago, and I never really listened to him for his lyrics anyway I like pretty much everything he's ever released anyway though
for sure, all the more power to people who are into it, i just think its a noticable weak spot in his otherwise solid discog. i think he started pulling himself out of what i perceived as a slump with bbtm and now with starboy hes completely out of that with a really solid front to back record.
These songs are amazing though, it would be a lesser album without them. Although I will admit the Future verse on "All I Know" goes on for too long and becomes boring and repetitive, just like much of his solo material
