he'll never top echoes of silence imo but ive been a huge fan of everything since starboy and this continues the trend
BBTM put a very bad taste in my mouth, hated that album when it came out but every release since has improved on the last and this feels like a new non-mixtape peak
Damn the bridge in Gasoline is one of the first “moments” on the record. Really peeks behind the curtain for a split second to let you know what’s to come
The songs that grabbed me most on After Hours hit harder for me than anything did here on first listen. Honestly felt a bit samey to me, but at least it's a good samey. The sound is absolutely ridiculous. Wouldn't be surprised if this grows on me, already think it's a lot of fun just feel like that's damning it with faint praise a bit.
I liked the album, but it really just cemented how much better After Hours than nearly any other album to come out the r&b/pop scene these past couple years.
I got high and took my dog for a night walk and listened to the whole album. Great first listening experience. I know everyone has already mentioned it, but goddamn “Less Than Zero” is something else. It almost reminded me of The 1975 in a way.
I don't think this is better than After Hours, Trilogy or Kiss Land but it's still fantastic, I think it perfects what he was going for with Starboy. Such a cool, unique vibe the whole time, you really get sucked into the atmosphere of the album right away. All of the interludes and transitions between songs are really fucking well done Think I have to echo the Less Than Zero love as my favorite off two listens but I already liked the album even more the second time I listened so I think I'll be listening to this all year
I don't think it's better than After Hours but I like it more than anything else he's done since House of Balloons. Before this those were the only two I really got into.
When he goes almost post punk on songs like Gasoline and Don’t Break My Heart, that’s the sweet spot.
Honestly have loved every album he's put out, and this one only continues that streak. I don't think it surpasses After Hours but I'll need to listen for a while to properly rank.
I think someone said it a couple pages ago but the transition from How Do I Make You Love Me? into Take My Breath is fucking sick
I don’t think he has ever done a song like Gasoline and for that reason it is my favorite. Really great way to kick off the album (after the brief intro).
Couple listens in now, and while the songs still aren’t grabbing me like After Hours, the concept and presentation are so cool that I just keep wanting to come back to it.
That was me and I agree - the little touches here lending to the concept and totality of the vibe elevates the record. Also the extended electronic grooves allows for 0pn to breathe
It moves so quickly and transitions really well, which I think is why it’s resonating more with me than AH did. 16 tracks in 51 minutes is nicely done.
Listened to this album on a run this morning and my god it was perfect for that (and probably many other things). The beats on this just put me in a trance and let me moooove
I like to think that this album and Magic Oneohtrix Point Never are radio stations in the same universe
