Madness when people group Trilogy together when ranking his works - they're all so distinct and pretty much album themselves. House of Balloons still reigns supreme over all.
I haven't listened to the mixtapes separately in a long time, that's why. But I think the second one was my favorite.
Wasn't a dig btw, hope you know that. I know why people do it because it ended up being packaged that way as well and they were succintly released in a timeline. The EPs rate as they were released to be fair for me. you could make BBTM a 9 song outstanding album too. An outstanding amount of songs in his discography now and I really love that he's done this all himself without any features. A real cementing of his place in music.
I didn't even rank the three because they are easily the best, I basically just started to ranking to see what post-Trilogy thoughts are
I think it’s interesting that despite trilogy being seen as the best by most of his fanbase, he doesn’t really play any of it live. Only 3 songs from HOB and nothing from the others
Agree with this - I've seen 3 songs off thursday and echoes but I've seen the full of HOB but that was when he first came here. Since then, no Thursday/Echoes songs and some HOB ones.
I think all of his previous albums have had filler as much as I love him, this on initial listen feels like it has the least if any at all. I don't know if anything will top the initial shock and amazement of the sound of HOB/Thursday/Echoes of Silence for me but I think this will end up being his strongest album.
Never thought I would be typing this in 2020 but I think The Weeknd just released his best album. Just all the way through it’s incredible, with amazing production, great melodies/singing from Abel and a really cohesive feel. It almost seems like a concept album to me, with him depressed in LA until Escape from LA where he goes to Vegas and all of the videos start. I’ll have to read into the lyrics more but it definitely comes across as a story to me Either way, I’m in love with this album. I’m a sucker for the whole outrun aesthetic and this has that in spades
It's still early for the new one but I'd go House of Balloons>After Hours>Kiss Land>Thursday>Echoes of Silence>My Dear Melancholy>Star Boy>BBTM I was actually surprised to find that SB had passed BBTM for me on my most recent listenthrough because clearly from my ranking I enjoy his dark/atmospheric stuff the most but while both of the bottom two albums suffer from too much filler, BBTM actually does slightly worse imo I love them all though, can't fucking wait to see him live (whenever the hell that happens)
This whole album is great. Took a while to grow on me, but this is great. Too Late, Snowchild, & Heartless are my faves. Scared To Live is the only song that I don't "get", mainly cause it reminds me of "Love Yourself" by Justin Bieber. Don't have that insane love for Blinding Lights like most people, it's a solid 7/10, but is still kinda cheesy and not as dark as I like my Alternative R&B jams.
Listened through once and was kind of bored. Thought all the singles were the best. I’ll listen through a few more times and see if it clicks more.
Album is a lot more insular and introspective than what those singles gave the impression of. Heartless lyrically gave you the impression that he was back on his bullshit but the album is very much the opposite of that. I'd agree with the post that says its kind of a concept, visuals would support that with videos and performances on snl/tv
Literally just aimlessly drove around and listened to this album at night because I knew it would match the aesthetic perfectly and it made me love this even more
