I'm watching We're the Weakerthans, We're From Winnipeg this morning and wishing more than ever that I had a chance to see them live.
Man its so great to see some Weakerthans and Hip fans around here. Reconstruction Site is their best album for me. Not a single weak track and some personal favorites of theirs (title track, Benediction). But wow I just put on Left & Leaving again and jesus christ. Hard to argue with either that or Reunion Tour. And for a Canadian, I'm admittedly late to the Tragically Hip party, but damn if Nautical Disaster isn't a monster of a track.
What the fuck is this??? Man I thought I'd seen everything weakerthans related out there. Guess I've got plans tonite now
It's a documentary about their Canadian tour from 2010, interspersed with lots of great live footage. For some reason, I think it used to be hard to find a copy in the US, but I picked up the DVD with my pre-order of Winter Wheat. I wouldn't say it's best tour doc I've ever seen, but there's some nice moments with the band and a couple interesting interviews. In particular, there's one where John says that he imagines the Weakerthans as a band that would never really break up unless something irreconcilable happened between the members, which made me really sad now that they are actually done. Edit: I don't think it's streaming anywhere, but I did find this other video from a show in Alabama in 2008 with a few interview parts:
Aaron West and The Roaring Twenties just put up a cover of "My Favourite Chords" on Bandcamp for pay what you want (the rest of their catalog is pay what you want too) with all proceeds going to the ACLU through November 28th.
So this weekend discovered I really really like (and at risk of being premature, I might love) Left & Leaving after trying every once in a while and wow that was satisfying. Reconstruction Site is similarly great, feel about the same about them. I haven't gone back to fallow since my first listen many months ago though
It's definitely more immediate than L&L was, and Plea From a Cat Named Virtute is so fucking great too
and the title track which is a better version of any Train song, and the social commentary in One Great City, and the bleary eyed lyrics in The Reasons, and the pretty Vox AC30 clean guitars in Time's Arrow, and the fast paced punky one about the Antarctican Explorer, and the Elk's Lodge about breaking glasses in a dead restaurant and listening to a bad quality radio station and still really enjoying each others company like i said, album is perfect
Glad i live in a world where a thread about the Weakerthans can somewhat blow up overnight. Seeing John K for the first time next week :)
Pronounced "VER-TOO-TAY" if anyone's interested Virtute the Cat Explains Her Departure >> Plea from a Cat Named Virtute
Also, lol at Reconstruction Site being a better version of any Train song. It's not entirely inaccurate.
