That's probably why I really liked it. That and Cry are two of the only songs I've really liked since LFTL.
Very much THIS. Best days a lot of things. I remember him referring to the riff in Pretty Handsome Awkward as a “jazzy” style riff in a Guitar World magazine.
Just seeing this and I agree. Its not that Joey isn't good, bc he's a great guitarist. But they could definitely benefit from at least a touring guitarist or something in the background on songs. Even if it is just the guitar tech. Joey has a really cool and unique guitar tone using jazzmaster single coils, but that also takes away from the fullness of the mix since the single coil tones cut right through everything else. I think Quinn got away with it because he played a lot of rhythm and leads at the same time with humbuckers and a full distorted sound. I'm not even going to discuss Justin being in this band. Oof. I know you know what I'm talking about though lol. You're in a band lol. Just needed to get this one out because I've definitely noticed it! Needless to say, I'm still stoked and curious about this new album. Joey's brother mentioned the album does have a mix of things, but that there is a still a lot more heavier stuff on it. So, hopefully he's right lol.
I Come Alive-now that is a good song for it's rhythmic interest. Not since Brandan and Quinn were in the band had they had such an interesting song like the caliber of their early days. I mean, I'd personally attribute that to a good drummer because they are typically the rhythm masters of the band, but not always. That being said, I think they were trying to recreate what they might've lost with Brandan and that makes me wish all the more that he was still in the band. Again though, i could be wrong about who contributed what, but that would be my guess as to a major part of what made TheUsed special in the beginning...but I'm glad for songs like I Come Alive... I've been following Branden on Twitter for some time now (lol originally because i was digging his dreadlocks :P) but ive come to realize how great he was for TheUsed and his post yesterday made me sad yet hopeful that he might return someday. I was under the impression that maybe he didnt want to come back, but his nostalgia post about Taste of Ink (was it?) basically said he'd come back if they reconciled. That'd be awesome! But then what happens to current drummer (oops, frankly I don't even know the past drummer/drummers name/s)?
Maybe I should have read this more closely before my last post. It does sound like Quinn also had a lot to do with rhythmic interest of the music too. Yea? I dunno. I'm not really a guitar wiz. A little more complicated than drums since you're dealing with not only rhythm, but tone as well...not that I'm particularly savvy about drums either, but I know some of the basics. Guitars, especially electronic ones and with all the pedals and shit, yea that's just beyond me and I'm ok with that. Lol I'm more of a vocalist to be honest, so I tend to take most interest and also criticism in singers, although I can appreciate a good "sound" from the rest. ;)
Dan Whitesides is the definitive drummer of The Used and he's fantastic. Branden was also really great and gave the band a different flare for those first two records. I also think he's an awesome person and I'm happy he's doing so well in Rancid, I hope the project he started with Quinn sees the light of day at some point.
i'd love to see branden play with the used again, but honestly that would be messed up for dan, he's been with the band for so long now it would be wrong to kick him out.
Branden is living the life being the drummer of his favorite band growing up must be a real crazy surreal feeling
I don't really listen to Rancid, but yea, if he's happy that's great. But he is obviously still nostalgic for TheUsed and I personally would love to see him back...but again, I also respect and wouldn't want Dan to just be put out either....so yeah, "two drummers!" ;) Oh sorry "double drums"
As much as I love Branden, at this point Dan has been the drummer for way longer than Branden ever was. Dan has more than cemented his position as their drummer.
Oddly enough, I listened to LSS podcast with Cove from Saosin and I guess he was a huge fan of that band before he joined them too. Was a pretty neat story.
Any time a band says their new record sounds like a throwback to "all the fans' favorite album(s)" - it's usually not a good sign........
Especially when you can't recreate your screams or Branden's drums, you REALLY shouldn't go there lol
And when you've been sober for 8 years, have made significant strides in life, and also have a completely different guitarist in the band.
