What a comeback

 

This album is fucking phenomenal, excited about this. Might have to miss a round or two, though, as I will be moving across the world on Sunday night.

The Camper Velorium II: Backend Of Forever - Hard decision. but Backend of Forever takes it by the smallest of margins.

Three Evils (Embodied In Love And Shadow) - Another tough one. Hard round, but have to go with my gut.
The Crowing - Easy decision, as The Crowing is their best song, but Al the Killer is a fucking great song and sucks to see it exit so early. Probably my third fave on the album after The Crowing and the title track.

 

I feel like I need to preface this by saying I like The Crowing.

Before this thread, I wouldn't have ever guessed it's a fan favorite at all. For a band whose fan base typically likes their more deep and complex songs, this song seems kind of basic. From the first simple riff you hear, it never really goes any further for me. I'm just surprised it's murdering Al The Killer so bad lol.

Again, I like the song, the whole album and am a fan of the band.

 

The Crowing has at least three highly distinct phases/movements... the first 3:30, then the bridge, then the climax/outro. Multiple key changes. It isn't the most complex track on IKS, but it's got a ton going on and it's infinitely more interesting than a lot of their newer stuff. Total classic, IMO.

Blood Red Summer is the lone boring/basic song here and I hope to see it go next round. Would've voted against it matched against any actual IKS song.

Also appreciate the response. I guess I just don't hear it, but I know I'm in the minority so it's all good.

I think my critiques of Crowing are the same with this track, but Blood is so so catchy and poppy so I don't think they were going for anything but in this track. Have they ever gone this poppy in a track in their discography?

 

I would say that A Favor House Atlantic, The Suffering and Feathers are comparably poppy. Maybe even World of Lines.

(I haven't listened to any album after Year of the Black Rainbow so can't speak for the rest of the discography)

 

The Running Free is pretty dang poppy but it's also a good earworm.

 

AFHA on this album is just as poppy as BRS, but it's actually infectious enough to justify itself. BRS is a skipper for me on an otherwise perfect record.

crazy though how good this band is that a certified banger of a pop single is considered a bad/boring song by measure.

 

dude that middle part of The Crowing has some fucking riffs worthy of a math metal band

I'm so sad that Al The Killer went up against The Crowing. It deserves to go deeper than just round one.

 

Agreed. It's my favorite of the Veloriums.
