The instagram post about it making me tear up from James. These lyrics weren't on the 'radio version' played on BBC. Song below!
‘I woke up and couldn’t move’: Scottish rockers the Twilight Sad on births, death and breakdown this sounds like it will be absolutely devastating + Robert Smith is on 3 tracks
The Twilight Sad - It’s The Long Goodbye: Album Review | Live4ever Media The Twilight Sad | It’s The Long Goodbye | Album Review - Record Collector Magazine A couple of reviews of the album have started popping up too that they had shared. There are spoilers for lyrics if that bothers you but the opening track is going to be very very emotional.
James getting on meds and starting to feel happier per that interview absolutely sucker punched me. I'm in that exact same situation.
It's excellent as expected but lyrically it's even more tough, brutal and raw than I expected. I love James' ability to deliver.
This is everything the band said about each song during the Bandcamp Livestream. Been trying to add these to Genius but it told me to chill... GET AWAY FROM IT ALL - JAMES - this was always going to be the 1st track on the album. Many tears were shed (by me James…not Andy) when I listened to the mixes the first time. It’s a pretty self explanatory song when you know the album subject but overall it’s about losing someone you love. ANDY - this was the first song we wrote for the album. I had been listening to Minimal Wave releases from the early 80's, and got the idea for the chord changes. It was always going to be the opener for the album as well, I saw it kind of like our version of 'Plain Song' DESIGNED TO LOSE JAMES - Just me questioning mortality and wrestling with my emotions……again. “I can’t teach you how to love me” isn’t about making someone love you……it’s self doubt……it’s not understanding what’s happening to you & your loved ones…….its about the disease and how it was stripping all the elements of someone I knew and loved. ANDY - The desk Andy Savours used to record us in (Alan Moulder and Flood’s) Battery Studios was the same desk used for ‘Nevermind The Bollocks’ and ‘London Calling’ Chris Coady mixed the album in LA, and Matt Colton mastered it at half speed at Metropolis in London. ATTEMPT A CRASH LANDING - THEME - JAMES - I know we all leave this place and I think we all hope we leave peacefully & gracefully. But with this disease I just kept saying to myself “don’t leave me this way” ANDY - David Jeansy’s drums sound amazing on the record, it was an old 60’s Ludwig that he’d bought from the Hollies. We also had Mitch Mitchell’s snare that he used with Jimi Hendrix at the Isle of Wight festival, but we ended up switching it out, it didn’t sound as good as another snare we had. WAITING FOR THE PHONE CALL - JAMES - i can’t wait to play this live! ANDY - This came from idea of trying to mix Modeselektor with Zeppelin, it’s a good one to play live. All the guitar/synths Melodies were improvised. Alex from Mogwai managed to get the Roland 100M (that was used on Violater by DM) working so it features quite a lot on this song. Robert Smith plays Ebow Guitars in the outro. THE CEILING UNDERGROUND JAMES - I can see that this song was written when I started to become really ill and I didn’t understand what was happening……..well I did but I couldn’t control my emotions any more and this all came out when Andy sent me the music ANDY - I like the chord sequence in this song - Ebm, Bbm, G#, Bmaj7, Ebm,Bbm, G#m DEAD FLOWERS JAMES - a big noisy epic about death ANDY - This was originally called ‘Dead Flowers by the Stones’ When I was writing this drum beat, I was trying to mix the Tom Tom Club together with Liars, I had the bass line and then I improvised all the Melodies that the guitars and synths are playing. Robert Smith plays some keys and noisey guitars. INHOSPITABLE JAMES - The closest to something catchy we’ve ever written I think ANDY - There was a version of this song demoed from “Nobody Wants To Be Here….” Although we couldn’t quite get it right and had kind of forgotten about it, but when all the songs were coming together, we revisited it. There was something about it that worked well with these songs. CHEST WOUND TO THE CHEST JAMES - a song about having to grow up and real big life things happening. Taking on responsibilities but knowing you’re still the young clueless boy inside. BACK TO FOURTEEN JAMES - going to let everyone make their own minds up about this one TV PEOPLE JAMES - the last song on the album but one of the first songs written for it. From the same bath of demos as “get away from it all”. I think we knew we had the start & the end of an album many years ago
Finally getting around to this and it is great so far, as expected, but it’s killing me that the lyrics aren’t on Apple Music.
yeah incredible album, one of their best but good fucking lord I will need to brace myself to listen to this in future. gonna call my parents now
Still haven’t had a chance to sit down with the lyrics but I love this album - possibly my favorite front to back of theirs.
Never listened to these guys but got a cheap ticket to see them in London tomorrow and thought why not. Should I go in blind or listen to a couple of albums first?
definitely listen to a couple just so you're prepared for the vibe. i'd say Nobody Wants is the best introduction to them
I'd listen to It Wont Be Like This All The Time and this new album first. If you like it then just work backwards or forwards after that. Setlist is dominated by those two albums for the tour. I saw them in Oslo on this tour and they sound great so you're in for a treat. James is such an engaging and emotive performer.
Had a listen to Nobody Wants and enjoyed. Will try and get through It Won't Be Like This before tomorrow evening!
