I got about 3 minutes into the dialogue before stopping the movie; my brain just can't process Shakespearean language fast enough to understand what the characters are saying.

2 couples left my theater screening of it. I thought it was great. Even though I didn't understand plenty, the visual storytelling was easy enough to follow.

Would be cool if it had subtitles that translated it to normal English

Middle English really isn't that hard to understand, especially when the actors are performing it instead of just reading it from the text. Worst case scenario you can read a quick summary of the plot to understand it.

    Dagger means knife

Shakespeare's comedies are incomprehensible but I have no problem with his tragedies

I just finished teaching Macbeth to my lowest level students (a really satisfying amount of whom REALLY dug it) today. Absolutely perfect timing

This feels weird without the English accents. Gorgeous tho.

Richard III and Henry V have their appeal, but generally yeah, they’re too dry

Unless it’s 1956’s Forbidden Planet, in which case, definitely do watch

The Taymor one with Helen Mirren? You must be young. I had to show it to my 11th graders and hated it.

in high school i had to review a play of the tempest that for some reason had a "telenovela" spin and i will never understand why that was a thing

Jesus, this is one of the most gorgeous movies I’ve ever seen. It’s almost distracting how incredible the visuals are

It looked incredible but it's the biggest disappointment I've had in awhile.

  25. Watched last night and I don't think anyone could say a negative word about the way the whole thing looked. I can't think of another Shakespeare movie that chooses to evoke the limitations of the stage while not feeling like a "filmed play" or whatever.

I thought most of the cuts and changes to the content (at least the ones I recognized) were strong choices, especially the treatments of Ross and the Weird Sisters (which were also the best acting, wow wow).

And then the weakest part of the whole thing was definitely Frances McDormand's performance, and I wasn't super thrilled with Washington's either.

It says a lot about the final product that I'd still give it 7-8/10.

Edit - One day there'll be a good Tempest movie. The newest one came out when I was in undergrad and boy oh boy was it a disappointment.
