Have no knowledge of the story / haven't read the books, but as someone who has had a strong personal interest in physics for a long time, after one episode this show intrigues me greatly.
The books have some of the most interesting use of physics and scientific concepts I've ever read in a sci-fi novel. No idea how it will translate to the screen, but the ideas are wild.
Watched the first episode and man they are flying through the material. The westernization of the story kind of sucks and I feel like you lose a lot of depth of character and meaning taking away the focus from China. Splitting Wang Maio into multiple characters is weird and I don’t really understand why it’s necessary. Feel like this is going to turn into a team up thing with the friends. Absolutely butchered Da Shi. Probably the most egregious thing. flicker scene looked awful lol. All that being said, if you’re unfamiliar with the source material, there’s probably enough intrigue here. I feel like the pacing is so fast but would be curious if non book readers think its slow.
I definitely didn’t find it slow as a non-book reader. Just finished a little bit ago, enjoyed the season and ordered the books because I want to know what happens next lol. Last time I did this was after GoT season 1.
just book 1 but it’s an incredibly faithful adaptation. It’s quite long but after you read the book, you should check it out.
Fuck man that’s disappointing to hear. Definitely my favorite from the book. Do they introduce any characters from The Dark Forest or Death’s End? My biggest question was how they’d handle the huge time jumps and basically all new characters for each book.
Yes but the names are different and they aren’t Chinese lol. I believe the season gets into the wallfacer project by the end so a good way into dark forest. I’m only on episode 3 right now.
Just finished watching the entire season, really liked it. Wasn’t familiar with the source material, but plan on reading the books.
Finished this and have some thoughts. Going to just type them out with no rhyme or reason. I feel like the GoT bros just wanted to rush through the story as quickly as possible and hit some main plot points. Could have really used another two episodes to expand on Ye’s past and spend more time in the game. I felt like the science and sci-fi aspects were so surface level. Auggie is an awful stand in for Maio and the writers did her no favor. Da Shi was absolutely butchered. Jin and Ser Davos are the best parts of the show. I get that they had to streamline the story but feel like they wasted a lot of time on the interpersonal nonsense when they could have expanded more on certain characters motivations or the science. I hope this gets people to read the books but I hope those that do don’t get annoyed that the show is very different and they stick with it.
