I don't have a dog in this fight but this is a fairly simple equation.

Theaters have X amount of screens. If more slop that is bad but profitable exists, there is less screens for things that are good. If slop is profitable, studios will want more slop and less good.

It is much harder to see great films in theaters than ever before. You can just look at yearly box office numbers over the years.

Will the other films be as successful as Mario? Probably not. Someone will get overconfident and make an Earthworm Jim movie or something and it will bomb. It will take years of oversaturation, though.

Didn't the majority of you go to this movie by choice? Like you paid money to see this movie and sat in a theater to watch it and are now saying it is causing the death of the industry? Did you also pay to see the first one in theaters?

The only reason I sat through this was because we had a free afternoon and my son chose this over Hoppers. We have a limited amount of days left on this earth, why would you think that the second Mario movie would be worth your time?

And, at the same time, what did you find so abhorrent in this one that wasn't in the first one? Or in any number of the IP slop that comes out each year.

I do wanna state for the record that I haven't seen this but THIS is what my brain keeps going to. I had fun in theaters for the first movie but it was pretty obvious that it wasn't any good, so I'm confused because I can't imagine this is that different than the original in quality? But maybe I'm wrong and it is drastically lower quality but I just can't imagine how

I believe everyone that it's without substance and that's why I was already not seeing it

The first one was The Godfather in comparison.

People who post here tend to go to the movies a lot. It is not a huge success based on that. It is a huge success based on the four theater trips a year crowd.

No it wasn't, the first one was bad too.

The first one was bad, but significantly better than the second film.

This is interesting because it puts me in mind of 80s cartoons like GI Joe where clearly the goal was to be a commercial for toys and any "moral" was literally tacked on at the end. I remember all that fondly from my childhood though, so I don't know where that falls in the grand scheme of things.

I'm not completely disagreeing. I agree with you that it is becoming more difficult to see good films in theaters and also more theaters are closing than ever before because of the impact.

This could potentially lead to more video game adaptions as well, like with Minecraft last year and it making nearly a billion while being a very bad film imo. From my perspective I just think the dependency of a kids movie being bad or good is much less of a variable in the decline of good movies in cinemas, when the rise of streaming services and production costs are at much greater fault.

If Mario Galaxy bombed I think the trajectory the film industry is going would still be in the same direction.

Just adding I haven't seen it, and I'm mostly just here for people calling Josh a dumbass. I just think their argument isn't without merit, even if i myself am confounded why anyone without kids would spend a minute watching this movie.

I tried, but he has seen the first Mario and gotten the Happy Meal toys and Hot Wheels. Hoppers should have been an existing IP to get his money.

I generally do not believe that video games work as movies (making an active experience into a passive one, taking a medium not known for great storytelling and making it more story focused), but something like the Mario success threatens those types of films. For decades video game movies were terrible, but they also mostly bombed so they did not come out that often. The Sonic movies are not masterpieces but they are okay enough, and the Last of Us and Fallout shows have been well received. Why take time and effort to make those things when you see the money Mario makes?

The core of the message is correct, this dumb nonsense stops better more innovative movies from being made. But so do dumb Star Wars and Superhero movies. I do not watch any of them unless I am asked by someone else.

Not one bomb but over enough time it has an effect. There are less superhero movies now because they started making less money. The R-rated comedies went extinct. They don't make that many found footage horror movies anymore.

I do think this is a natural progression of that, and while we are nostalgic about those things and have positive feelings about them, it probably was a net negative even then as well especially when we remember the IPs that tried and failed, and the overabundance of stuff we ended up with that was pretty nothing in the end. I could probably state that better but yeah
