The 1993 film was an okay product of its time. The Mario IP was a lot different and didn’t have much development back then and I see why it was so wacky. I watched it dozens of times as a kid. No ambition to watch it now though

I guess since this is specifically for small children it’s less annoying than the peak days of the MCU when adults were expected to take it seriously

My point is more that it doesn't help that the cast had an awful experience making it and it definitely showed in the final product.

It just looked bad, completely miscast, and really just even trying to make it in live-action was a mistake. I disliked it even as a kid. And the vast number of adaptive changes made it feel like it was originally intended to be a different film altogether.

    "Trust the fungus." Ugh.

I was probably less than 5 the first time I saw it and I remember having a crush on Daisy. Her and the pink ranger were my 90s crushes.

it's hard getting to a theatre with a toddler, plus there hasn't really been anything out lately that's interested me. except for a rocky horror screening, of course.

  8. I’ll be seated for this on Saturday and as long as my son has a good time at the movies that’s all that matters.

It's completely miscast but I disagree I think it looks good. The set design is kinda amazing. A truly deranged film

Deranged, I agree with. I'd probably be less harsh on it if it weren't supposed to be a Mario film but the absolutely unrecognizable take on everything is what bothered me, then and now.

I'm okay with not being beholden to source material, but there's original takes and then there's... not.

Which in retrospect you'd think I'd appreciate a film wallpapering with a license in name only since video games did that so so much.

Ok the toddler thing makes sense.

But also, there are so many cool movies out there to see. I just saw Forbidden Fruits last weekend, which fucking ruled, and that Raimi film Send Help earlier this year was cool.

Right, the Mario movie is as much a Mario thing as Super Mario Bros 2 is, lol.

Now that the fanservice movies exist, imo you should be able to appreciate something as weird as that old movie. But, I famously think people should appreciate weird, cool, not-quite-successful shit in general, so.

I heard that Raimi film was okay. I might check it out eventually.

One of the biggest problems with the old Mario film is it caused Nintendo to completely back away from movie adaptations until now, so all we get is super safe, committee-made stuff like this.

Yeah like Aaron Horvath & Michael Jelenic are the Teen Titans Go! guys. They have plenty of experience with writing jokes and having fun with IP. Them and the entire Illumination team are being held at gunpoint by Nintendo every step of the way here

I will forever go to bat for Teen Titans Go To The Movies! One of the best DC movies and a ton of fun.

I’ll be honest and say TTGTTM is the only Teen Titans thing I’ve seen. But I did have a great time, which I think speaks to its quality.

Having seen the movie, it's actually infuriating Star Fox was spoiled by the marketing last week. Fox showing up was the closest this movie felt to having any juice at all

Would have appreciated some DK in this. Also, just make a Mario Kart movie. If we're not worried about plot, at least that would be fun.

There was no way they were gonna keep that character a secret, especially with the high-profile actor playing him. With spoiler culture the way it is, it would have been all over social media after the premiere.

The female actresses were unutilized And Jack Black seemed like he was trying too hard for A children’s movie. And I love Jack Black

This was…a lot. My kids enjoyed it so that’s cool for them.

Weirdest thing structurally for me was how they kept separating the characters for no reason other than “some loud stuff happens! Here’s some more references” and then the characters all meet back up again with no questions about where they went and they just keep hitting that same beat repeatedly.

I like the 80s stylized animation sequence briefly showing Star Fox’s back story and I’ll happily take an entire movie in that exact style because that was cool.
