I saw a review that said it’s basically just a Nintendo references montage.

Just finished this. It’s not as good as the first. Plenty of references and nods which I enjoyed, also they didn’t throw pop songs into the film. It was pretty much all music from the Galaxy game which is good because it’s a top 5 game score of all time imo.

If you don’t play the Mario games or anything related then you’re going to be lost. Biggest criticism for me is that it felt more like a Super Mario World movie, instead of Galaxy. Mario barely travels through space and most of the setting seems like something from World. Also with the introduction of Yoshi they should’ve made this a World film and saved Galaxy for part 3. They were a bit too ambition with everything they threw into this film. Hopefully in the next they learn that less is sometimes more.

That aside it was a fun movie. I was smiling a lot through it.

    3.5/5

Bummer. Wild how the Sonic movies kept getting better and Mario is just beautifully animated slop.

Trans icon Birdo was the best part. I smiled and giggled at parts, didn't hate it. But if you're not a huge Nintendo fan I could see it being confusing drivel.

Insane how much more fun the sonic movies are.

This is basically like a series of TikToks that Illumination made to make Nintendo happy rather than a movie

I had a good time. Everything bad that everyone is saying about it is true, but it was fun throughout and I got to see a bunch of stuff that I recognize.

Sure it'd be cool if one of the movies that my kids will surely remember for the rest of their lives had some kind of story but it is what it is. And they liked it!

Yeah the audience I watched the movie with were all in on it. I haven’t heard a theater clap and laugh that much since the Minecraft film last year, at least this audience didn’t throw their food all over the floor.

I watched the Minecraft movie at home with my best friend and his daughter. We were all bored before it ended.

Neither are great or fantastic but thinking this one is better than the first is baffling to me.

I thought the first film was awful. I remember thinking the trailer looked fun and then I saw it and I didn’t like it at all. It was called the super Mario Brothers movie and Mario and Luigi were barely together in it. Plus Chris Pratt was a lame choice to voice an Italian Plummer

I think the opposite, haha. First one was like 15% bad story and 85% fun scenes and this one was closer to 5/95. Less bad more good!

The last part is what I'm concerned about. My friend wants to join me but she has never played a Mario game. It may be overwhelming.

The positive things I can say is that it’s a great-looking movie, but I think Illumination movies usually are (and most of them are bad movies when it comes to anything else). Also, Jack Black is still funny as Bowser.

Other than that, while I think “slop” is very overused at this point, it’s a perfect word for this. It’s just non-stop reference slop. There’s basically no plot. The movie just bounces around from scene to scene with the thinnest connective tissue. The character motivations change just to suit the scene. It’s a brain-dead movie, so it’s perfect for kids.

I just think in the age of “Hoppers,” “The LEGO Movie” or even “Sonic” (which isn’t great, but it’s at least passable), this is just lazy storytelling that, if you have no connection to the deep lore of Mario, you’re just sitting there going “I bet that was a good reference.”

Also, the voice cast is fine. There’s no reason Donald Glover needs to play Yoshi and Chris Pratt, for all the energy he put into “The LEGO Movie” is flat and lifeless as Mario. Hire actual voice actors!

The 1993 movie is still the best out of the 3 Mario movies lol

I just think the live action movie is awful in every way. Even the cast hated it. Even if these animated films are just "jingling keys" as the kids say, I cannot picture them being worse to watch than a legitimately terrible movie.

Marky Mark and Burt Reynolds hated Boogie Nights.

I have a soft spot for the 1993 movie since I used to watch it all the time as a kid. The sheer audacity of it is something to behold. The illumination movies do not have a take. No personality, literally nothing to offer but keys jangling. They are a good advertisement for the games though since it does make me want to play Mario games again

Anyway, Super Mario Galaxy Movie is a legitimately terrible movie

Yeah I didn’t enjoy Minecraft either. I went with a friend because we wanted to give it a chance. I’ve never played Minecraft so it was just a bunch of noise and colors to me

I haven't watched it in my adult life (and don’t remember how much of it I saw as a kid), but this feels like the correct take.
