Leguizamo and Hoskins are both honorary Italians for their brilliant performances in Super Mario Bros.: The Movie
I don't know if you mean people here or people on the larger internet, but this comment made me think about something. I wonder what tone this movie is going to be going for and if it will legitimately be geared toward children or if it will be geared toward general audiences, because there's a huge difference between the two.
The internet in general. Like Mario, whether people like it or not, is mainly aimed at children and always has been. He’s the Mickey Mouse of gaming. This is totally gonna be a family movie.
I’d say kids due to Nintendo going with Illumination for production. Nintendo already has a solid Mario fanbase consisting of adults that grew up with the character and games and will undoubtedly watch a movie featuring him. The target audience now will be the kids of that fanbase.
Hm, I hope not. Like I said, there is a huge difference between gearing something towards kids and something towards general audiences, and my feeling is that Mario is by and large been geared toward the latter more than just the former. Like, there have been jokes and gags in Mario games that while not what you'd call adult, would also not necessarily be appreciated by a child, and just because something can be enjoyed by a child, doesn't mean it can't also be enjoyed by an adult, because some things are just universal. I would like to be able to go see the movie and not feel out of place, is what I'm saying. I would hope that Nintendo and Illumination would bear that in mind, because their audience does include adults, and to ignore your built-in fanbase sounds like a marketing misfire.
A thing clearly being intended for children will never stop adults from thinking it is, or should be, for them. It’s neat when an animated film like Inside Out or Into the Spider-Verse is able to successfully hit a broad age range. I loved Raya and the Last Dragon earlier this year. But, I’ve got too much stuff to watch to give a shit if Nintendo and Illumination are thinking about me when making a dang Mario cartoon, lol.
I'm not sure if your opinion makes my opinion invalid, or if my opinion is really that big of a deal. It's not like this is something that keeps me up at night. I dunno, I'm sure this isn't your intention, but it's hard to not feel a little insulted. Is it wrong to want something to appeal to multiple generations?
you’re not wrong to want that, there’s nothing wrong with wanting that, and your opinion is absolutely not invalid lol
I don’t think you’re “invalid” or whatever and don’t care what people get dopamine rushes from. I’m just really burnt out by the larger cultural problem of people (which I’m not saying is you ‘cause I don’t know you) who are overly invested in nostalgic entertainment properties for kids. If critiquing that insults you… I dunno what to tell you. I’m very into some Marvel stuff, but when people critique its unhealthy place in popular culture today, I support those critiques.
If the movie was just for kids they wouldn't have this voice cast haha, you know how those 7 year olds love Anya Taylor-Joy but I do get how it could be weird seeing a kid's movie in theaters by yourself I'm always worried i'll be judged
No, I'm okay with criticism, and I do agree people get far too emotionally invested in... well, a LOT of things. The "insulted" part more came from the fact that your post immediately followed mine, sounded directed at me, and seemed to be saying "you shouldn't care because I don't care, after all, this is for children." It's like... double condescending. But no big. I do understand and agree with the general thrust of your feeling.
This topic reminds of Star Wars. George Lucas said that he made the films for kids, but I know more adults that talk about those films than kids.
I can see this being like The Mitchells vs The Machines or Wreck It Ralph imo. I’m sure there will be a couple nods to the parents but overall, the tone and content will be aimed at families. Plus, why does it need to be anything more than that?
A huge chunk of the SW merchandise empire is exclusively aimed at adults, like the fancy toys and high end merchandise. This applies to Nintendo too.
