We can come up with dozens of animated movies that are for both kids and adults and have a great story and look great visually. Really zero excuse to not bring in a good writer (who they got doesn't seem that impressive based on his credits).

 

"We made it for the fans" is not a real excuse. I'm already not liking where "Mario Movie" discourse is headed.

Having not seen the movie yet, this kinda shows how broken rotten tomatoes is - the reviews i looked at do not make it sound actually bad, more just "it's fine".

The proper way to engage with film criticism is to just read writing from critics you find interesting, even if you disagree with them. Just checking a score on a site like RT is useless and this feels like another one of those movies that is breaking brains because of it.

“Feels like watching a video game” can be a legit complaint for sure, it’s my biggest issue with stuff like Hardcore Henry or John Wick for example. Just seems like a real silly takeaway about a movie that is quite literally based on not just *a* video game, but arguably the most well known one of all time and licensed by a company that is famously cautious with their properties. It was never not gonna be a bunch of world building around characters and mechanics we’re already conditioned to see and experience through the games

Time will tell but if the movie stinks I just can’t imagine that being the reason why

 

Or just understand what the RT score means. And then, yea, read or watch some reviews. The score just lets you know the ratio of fresh vs non fresh scores. Broad stroke. You want details? Go to the critics themselves.

I think the problem for me anyway is that Mario deserves so much more than “it’s fine.” The number of bad Mario video games is minuscule, it just would’ve been nice if that high quality the franchise is known for would’ve applied to the movie. And maybe it does idk but again I’m just saying my expectations dropped big time

 

They’ve made two fun Sonic movies. And we’re about to go 0 for 2 on Mario movies? That’s fucked up.
