Just finished watching The Substance and fucking hell it lived up to all the hype and then some!! I really hope Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley gets some serious awards recognition for their performances in particular Demi Moore.. definitely the best performance of her career!
i really don't understand the hype for this movie. Apart from being drop dead gorgeous and fairly well paced, after enjoying the first hour or so I just found it stay invested since it expected me to suspend my disbelief to a point I just couldn't. - so are they the same or no? Elizabeth always reacting with the Pikachu shocked face after waking up as to what Sue did, despite being told over and over that they are the same was confusing. - this obviously made both of them being alive at the same time confusing. - why and how did they even let her on stage in the end? is this some sort of meta-commentary I am not getting, since she glued her old face on? I get that the film carries a message that resonates with a lot of people, but I don't really feel like it's saying anything revelatory, interesting, or insightful. given the reception to this movie I fully expect to be pilloried for this but oh well
I actually have more than one thought. My other one is that the substance looks like the fluid inside a spirit level
Kept seeing this hyped everywhere so I watched tonight and I feel like it exceeded the hype somehow, right from the start the colors and directing choices caught my attention and by the end I had been smiling/mouth open/laughing for almost all of it, haven’t felt this moved by a movie in a few years for sure
Finally got around to watching this last night and yea I loved it. It's definitely a bit heavy handed/easy to read where it would go for most of it but I don't care with how fun and well-directed it is. I fucking love how much they committed to the end. They could have easily just had Sue kill Elisabeth and then go to the New Years Eve show and just start to show signs of things going bad for her and ended the film, and it would have made for a good movie still. However they went the extra mile and that really elevates it to something really special, the last like 20-30 minutes of the movie are spectacular
