Excellent. This was excellent. Ill say 9/10. Obviously different, unique, and of course I agree with one review I found that said the casting of Demi Moore was EVERYTHING. I can't imagine a better choice. Is this a masterpiece? No but there's something about the simplicity of the plot that I appreciated. Of course of course of course I realllllly appreciated the 80s grotesque monster make up stuff. Seeing the mega monster at the end gave me a tear in my eye (I'm a weird guy). The movie looked great. Simple. Different. I had a good time.
my Amazon pre-order was delayed because they sold out, so i cancelled it and grabbed it in person at Walmart
true, but it's better than waiting a month for Bezoa to replenish stock (plus it's unfortunately the only place in town to still purchase physical media)
i'm actually surprised at how many titles from smaller studios are being sold at Walmart nowadays, between A24, MUBI, and Shudder - some of them Blu-ray instead of DVD
We (Shout) still has Walmart as a leading retailer, but 90% is DVD, they rarely come on board for Blu-rays from us anymore
yeah, the vast majority of their in-store stock is still DVD, so i'm not surprised. bit of a treat to see anything in higher quality.
ugh. i had suspected she might've expressed some pro-Israel sentiments after seeing some video she posted on her IG a long time ago, but wasn't fully sure. i really do love The Substance, but this is definitely gonna change how i approach her work going forward, if at all. edit: looking into this more and it seems that her tweet (now deleted) was posted back in November 2023 (based on the date of the video she linked), just for the sake of clarity re: timeline.
The production value is excellent and really carries the movie, and it’s hilarious that a movie with this ending is a Best Picture nominee But the story itself is disappointingly shallow, especially for its length. It could have been an hour-long Black Mirror episode
This was so gross and so great. Anyone questioning the linked consciousness element of the story needs to watch a video of themselves from 10 to 20 years in the past. Does it feel like you share consciousness with that former version of yourself? Do they think and act like you do now? Thinking about it that way made it make sense to me.
I didn't mind the "shallowness" or simplicity of the story, rather I loved the way it turned that simplicity into a strength by emphasizing each stage of the process in a gradual, methodical manner that felt more befitting of classical tragedy than a modern horror movie. The production and prop design are fantastic - the little things like how the second package is a little smaller than the first because it doesn't contain an Activator do so much to sell the world. But mainly I was floored by the mix of practical and computer effects, remarkably seamless.
This was boring and way too long. Ending was fun, I am glad I skipped around and watched it instead of turning it off.
The only thing this movie made me think about was that I should've just watched Possession again and would the Elephant Man have been better if he exploded.
It has definitely benefited from all the attention Emilia Perez has gotten. Conclave as well, too a lesser extent.
Anora was my easy fave of the BP noms I've seen and it seems to be picking up steam as well. One of the rare interesting years where I'm not sure how it'll shake out
