Getting emotional for any win or loss is so strange. They aren't going to share the money with you.

How do they compare at all?

  6. People tend to invest themselves in things that don't matter for a fun (to them) distraction from the hellscape, more at 11

But why an industry award show that just enriches publicists, trade magazines, advertisers, and the winners, especially given its negative effects on the industry it is supposedly celebrating?

  8. Because most people don't think like that. At best, they are aware that they are watching a bunch of rich people pat each other on the back, but like to see if the movies/entertainers they admire won the big trophy. They see it as a step towards the thing they enjoy enduring in the zeitgeist. Whether it actually does or not is obviously an entirely different story

I don't give a shit about organized sports, but I get invested in the Oscars.

But we know that it doesn't really affect the long-term zeitgeist. How many people watched Goodfellas in 2024 versus how many people watched Dances With Wolves? How many people remember Driving Miss Daisy over Do the Right Thing? Saving Private Ryan vs. Shakespeare in Love, The Social Network vs. The King's Speech. We all know these examples.

The reason the sports analogy doesn't make much sense is because most of the point of sports is to root for a winner. They are pretty boring if you have no interest in the outcome. However, and more importantly, sports are designed for there to be a winner and loser. There is an agreed-upon set of rules, well-known conventional strategies, and referees to enforce the conduct of the players. That doesn't exist for art and it doesn't exist for the Oscars. There are a lot of unofficial "rules" to get nominated, but then every once in a while they get broken and it works anyway.

These actors that people love so much will impress filmmakers and casting directors with the work they did, not the Oscars. The studios like the Oscar for marketing purposes.

  11. I don't think it's that deep for a lot of people. People see a person or things they like win and feel validated.

Ignorance is an excuse for only so long. There are plenty of people who know better and still support the ugliness of the whole spectacle.

    Maybe so, maybe not.

28-minute mini-documentary on the making of the film just dropped.

This was too long, upsetting, gross, and hits you over the head with its themes too much for me to honestly say I enjoyed it. A bit Requiem for a Dreamy. All that said, Demi’s performance is phenomenal (the sequence of her getting ready for her date hit hard), and there are some killer shots in this. Also cracked up at the blood geyser at the end lol.

Yep, I got big Requiem vibes from this and not in a particularly good way.

  16. Wild, I feel like I cannot think of many film that feels more different than this tonally than Requiem for a Dream lol this almost feels like the inverse to me in a weird way

That is interesting. More than anything it reminded me of that movie. A very punishing, cruel vibe throughout. Didn't seem like the kind of thing that's meant to be "enjoyed" in a traditional sense but I respect the film and I'm glad it's receiving the attention that it is.

A little late to the party but I watched this last night and really liked it. There were a few things that were confusing though. I couldn’t tell if Elisabeth and Sue shared a consciousness or not. Most things pointed to yes but a few situations confused me. Like when Sue found the chicken drumstick inside her body. Wouldn’t she remember if her Elisabeth self put it in there and take it out as soon as she woke up for her week?

I feel like there’s a lot of Vince McMahon influence on Dennis Quaid’s character.
