This is really good. Definitely feels like a continuation of Comedown Machine with a sprinkle of Angles imo, which is a good thing as far as holding together as an album goes. “Eternal Summer” was a really pleasant surprise. I think that was the one that reallllly stood out for me. I love what Julian does there. This record has the initial feel of a record that could one day be the dark horse favorite for a different type of Strokes fan. Which also can be said for CM and Angles tbh.
As an Angles lover, I'm definitely into the weirder stuff on this, and Julian sounds amazing, really great stuff.
Wow, this is really good so far! On Eternal summer, but I can already tell I'm going to like the rest.
I revisited Comedown Machine again in between plays of the new Phoebe Bridgers song today. I mean yea it’s easily the third best Strokes record. If anything it would have been the perfect follow up to ROF. It’s a gorgeous 80’s tinged record. “One Way Trigger” is a top 10 Strokes song and I remember the befuddlement that greeted it on arrival and how silly that looks in retrospect. Just a masterful tune. Surprised how straight forward the record sounds now in 2020. It was ahead of its time and yet sounds exactly like a Strokes record. “Slow Animals” and “Chances” are god tier Strokes ballads too btw, maybe a quarter step behind “Under Control”
I haven't listened to The Strokes since only liking a couple of songs on First Impressions of Earth in 2006. This new album is really fucking good. I only listened to it once but I really liked the entire thing.
Holy shit, this is really good. Haven't liked any album of theirs since Room on Fire. This is just so good.
I wouldn’t go that far personally - the first two LPs have a certain magic that the rest of the discography doesn’t have which is okay - the other 3 albums are still great and I think New Abnormal will be a hit with the majority of fans
True, I’m definitely biased with that record cause I didn’t start liking/listening to them until 07/08. So angles was their first album I looked forward to/was actually a fan of them when it was released, so I loved that album and the memories associated with it I was 20 years old, and somehow had the energy to go to school, work, and then head to the beach quite regularly that spring/ summer lol.
That’s how I feel about Comedown Machine, probably my favorite record of theirs. Starting the new album now.
