The Perfect Neighbor is devastating holy shit. I watched a ton of these bodycam clips on YouTube after I saw the trailer and this still hit hard. I get now why this is getting rare best doc feature Oscar buzz for a modern true crime doc. I don't think I have ever seen one told like this before. No talking heads. No narration. No dramatic reenactments. All just raw police bodycam footage, interrogation room footage, audio of witness statements, and a little bit of cell phone footage and local news clips masterly edited together into a narrative arc. Between this and her episode of the Netflix Katrina doc Geeta Gandbhir has impressed the hell out of me as a documentarian this year.
This case was in Ocala, but there is a point in this where Susan (the Karen) in interrogation brings up a past Stand Your Ground case in Florida at a convenience store. That one happened in clearwater at a store i have been to multiple times that is maybe 5 or 6 stoplights from where i live now. Crazy that case got namedropped in this.
Did you ever see the OJ 30 for 30 doc? I haven’t seen this Neighbor one yet, but your description above reminds me of the OJ doc. Just all news clips, raw footage and police audio. No interviews or anything.
Yes. That also won the Oscar for best doc feature IIRC. This one is on that level. Just shorter. For some reason that didn't come to my mind as true crime because like a lot of people in my mind the spectacle of the OJ thing is bigger than the actual murders that took place (which is an unfortunate part of that case but it is what it is), but yeah that one was one of the best docs of the 21st century.
I think this doc ultimately shows that yes Stand Your Ground of itself is bad and problematic, but the worse part of it is the widespread public misunderstanding of what Stand Your Ground even is. Too many people in Florida think it's just a license to shoot anyone who is threatening to you in any way. It's not. I actually think the doc's only real fault was it didn't really explain to the audience exactly why what Susan did wasn't considered Stand Your Ground by the court.
Yeah, that was rough. Absolutely heartbreaking, but necessary documentary. One of the best docs I’ve ever seen.
Incredibly well made doc. I wasn't familiar with the story so I was worried there'd be no justice but thankfully it ended on a slightly positive note after being enfuriating and heartbreaking for 90 minutes
