Paramount is just an endless array of stingy, weird decisions and cost-cutting across the board. From all the shitty bending the knee to Trump to talking with Bari Weiss to its cancellations and turning entire channels into re-run factories. Like, I truly don’t get what the endgame is here - obviously outside of profit - because it doesn’t seem like it’s entertainment.

 

Also there is the hated rights deal dispute they're currently having with the creators of South Park

 

plus how much money they spent on sexual harassment lawsuits

 

I have had a working theory for awhile that the Trump era (among other factors) ruined late night.

Like around 2014/2015 when the late night shift happened it was settling into a place where Fallon was obviously trying to do a Carson-esque fun celebrity hangout thing, Colbert was trying to do a kinda Dick Cavett highbrow intellectual thing where he interviewed academics and writers, and Kimmel was trying to be Letterman doing pranks and man on the street bits. That was interesting. Then 2016 happened and they all were trying to be like The Daily Show and were indistinguishable from eachother.

One sign the writing was on the wall for the format was during the writer's strike Colbert, Fallon, Kimmel, Myers, and Oliver started a podcast together, and almost nobody listened to it or gave a shit.

 

Too many podcasts

 

It was a decent podcast and showed just how bad Fallon is at everything.

 

Kimmel’s contract ends next year too and he’s hinted at that being the end for him. I would bet ABC doesn’t continue with a new host so it’s possible by next summer NBC is the only standard network with late night.

I think I read awhile ago that media companies are getting ready to experiment more with long form video podcasts made specifically for streaming services, similar to that Netflix Letterman one. That is probably where their strategy is going, and I wouldn't be surprised if after Late Show ends that then it becomes about who can get Colbert for an exclusive podcast deal.

 

Podcasts should not be on video. Or at least they should not be referred to as podcasts.

 

Pretty thankful message from Colbert about the cancellation.
